|
|
Sent to me for pick-up within an audiobook I finished recording some weeks ago... "Cockburne's Port".
In my defense, I am not a drinker and was both EXHAUSTED and on TIGHT DEADLINE and okay... fine... I KNOW I should have looked it up... but I didn't.
I mean, it seems pretty clear cut doesn't it? Phonetic one would think...
So when it came back as a pick up without a phonetic spelling, but only the following reference link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=n3Iu0p40T5g
I was positively flummoxed...
Oh for the love of GRAPE JUICE, what did I say wrong THIS TIME?!?!
After watching the reference clip I HOWLED... absolutely HOWLED and have since adopted the slogan as my motto... at least for today... perhaps for the rest of the week... actually, I MAY TATTOO IT ON MY FOREHEAD! |

There were more than a few DJ's in 1980 who got into trouble for mispronouncing this artist's name - Bruce Cockburn - "Wondering where the lions are" (again..COH-burn)
Unlike Cris....Most of them were probably drinking. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

They used to run advertising back in the UK that was themed around a "Don't say Cock, say Co" tagline. That video was priceless though!
I've fallen foul of a couple of US names where I've been made to feel a tad stupid though... the point is that if you don't know, there's no way of knowing until you screw it up and people collapse around you in piles of laughter.
I guess the other one (which is a little better known) that never fails to crack me up is when an American tries to say worcestershire sauce without have pre-knowledge of the correct way. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Ohhhh man, that's a cracker!
@Bish, since moving here I still refuse to take on the North American pronunciation of many words. Most noteworthy is 'Home Depot'.

I have seen many examples over the years of words that WERE originally pronounced as they were spelled, but propriety, prudishness, or puritanism made folks change the pronunciation instead of the spelling.
But I will think twice before daubing that drink anywhere on my body.

How about Magdalen College? People with the surname Cholmondeley?

"Chumley" would like a word with you, sir.
The wildest one I ever saw (I'm guessing is might have been a joke) was
Featheringstonehaugh
pronounced
Fainshaw. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Ridiculous though it is, Featherstonehaugh pronounced Fanshaw is genuine. As are Belvoir pronounced Beaver and Beauchamp pronounced Beecham.
This one, I'm not so sure about...
