Oye. I dont' know if I need a different preamp (I just use the MicPortPro) or what, but I am ALWAYS having to clean up the boom bang boom on my audio. It's not my mic technique; I'm about 8 inches away and speaking across the mic, and I don't have the boom bang boom sound outside of my own home studio.
Is there a preset or something in Adobe Audition that can help me? Or a new preamp I need? It's awfully cumbersome going through my audio and cleaning up all the booming.
Any tips?

CC I listened, but still need a few more pieces of information; namely what mic are you using, is the room where you record treated, and how high have you turned the gain on the M ?
All of these things will help us offer a better idea of how to assess the problem and derive a solution.
One specific thing I heard was some sibilance on the current mic. I would bet that you also do not use the same mic when you are "out" of your home studio, correct?

Frank,
thanks for taking a listen
I'm using a TLM 103, which is one of the same mics I used for my commercial demo (which you can hear at www.ccheim.com). Yes my room is sound treated, and the M is turned to 3 o'clock.
the booming and banging is driving me nuts! Any help would be much appreciated!
xoxo,

The first few times I listened, I wasn't sure what you meant. Then I thought I discerned what I would call an "oscillation" in the sound -- a kind of "coming in and out." Like it gets louder for no apparent reason, and then retreats. It seems more pronounced in the latter half of the clip. (Actually, I think I only really hear it in the second half.)
Is that what you mean? |

Scolaidhe,
It's more of a thumping, bumping sound, like with plosives. I've bolded the words in the script that are thumping:

My studio monitors are pretty good at picking up bass and boomy noises and I heard nothing out of order on your sample.

CC, I don't hear the "bumping" on my end either.
Maybe your monitors (or headphones) are blown? _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Well, my suggestion is to change the angle of incidence 5 to 10 degrees regarding the mic and your voice's power area. The TLM is very sensitive at certain angles and although it may look correct, it is not. Another possibility is add or change your pop filter or it's angle in relationship to the mic. This "thump" IS a wind issue.
The sounds you (and I ) are hearing are subtle, but yes, disconcerting. Occam's Razor is a line of reasoning which says the simplest answer (or fix) is often correct.
