Stolen from great stand-up comedian Reg D Hunter - JSYLTS stands for (sounds great in his Atlanta drawl) Jus sumum yall like t'say.
My favourite for us Voiceoverists is "I'd like to move my career up a level". It sounds good yet when I ask people to go into detail they crash and burn, so far without exception.
Here's the approach to which I have never yet heard a meaningful response.
"Brilliant. So imagine you've done that - moved your career up a level and this morning at 10 you had a VO session at your new level, tell me about it."
Your greatest victories and successes will be born during the dreams you dare to dream whilst wide awake because your mind will seek out ways to turn those dreams into reality. |

This technique is spot on, Philip, and thanks for reminding me of it. It's been effective for me in the past and is something I need to take the time to use on a regular basis.
A related, helpful technique - if you have fears and hesitations regarding perceived obstacles, career or otherwise, take the time to imagine yourself overcoming them, by whatever means strikes your imagination during the visualization. Invent any number of scenarios. Feel how satisfied (or happy, or whatever) you are when you have successfully overcome the obstacle. See how creative, capable and competent you were while overcoming it.
Preparing these mental pathways makes it easier to subsequently turn them into reality. (Or at least, to answer Philip's question at the bar at Faffcon... ) _________________ jen@jengosnell.com
