Since I started my private studio in 2004, I've used a pair of Event Project Studio 6. They were recommended to me by the studio pal who helped me get my own studio started. I really have no idea how they might compare to the M-Audio speakers that have been suggested, but I've been happy with them. _________________ Best regards,

There have been a lot of great ideas out here and a lot of useful input!
And so now, I come full circle. I was able to score the new M-audio BX5 D2 monitors at a really, really good price. They'll be here tomorrow(Tuesday), and will definitely be a good upgrade to what I've been using.
Thanks again to everyone for all your helpful suggestions,
Mark |

Cool! Let us know how they work out for you.
I just love helping someone else spend money... it's almost as good as spending my own! _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Mark, I, too, would love to hear your take on these after you get them. I could use a better set of monitor speakers than what I'm currently using and am attracted by that price and the reviews. Post back here after you've had a chance to try 'em out. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Ok, I've got the D2's up and running. I like them a lot. But, I have no other frame of reference as this is the first pair of 'active' monitors I've had...
I know with every fibre of my being that much, much better monitors are being used every day.
But, here's why I like these(keep in mind I am not capable of using tech jargon):
They're nice and clear and natural, with plenty of bottom, mid and top for my stuff. More than enough power for my studio space. They sweet spot is wide and hovers out right between my eyes over my monitor(very 3-D) And, most importantly, they sound like me. I've listened to my stuff done in studio, and right here. and my vocal signature is true (maybe just a touch of color on the bottom if I want to be real picky).
These monitors also showed me that some of the testing stuff I've done here during the last month of studio transition has really, how you say.....acoustic suckfest? Eh? But, That's the whole reason behind my purchase of these things!
(Oh and, the cat has already thoroughly 'marked' them, so I think it's a done-deal.)
For those of you that want to 'test' your own monitors, m-audio has a pretty cool series of tone and sine wave audio checks here:
http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=media.overdub&show=tones1
I think the idea is that all or most of the frequency checks should sound similar in volume...but I could be wrong.
All the Best,

Glad they worked out. When I'm listening properly, I'm sat in about a three foot equilateral triangle with mine... they're mounted a little bit above head-height and angled slightly downwards. I've got them on arms poking out from between OC703 panels.... one's obscured behind the copy stand, but you get the idea.
One note though. It looks like the D2s have exposed main and HF drivers just like mine... Watch that cat!!! A determined moggy could probably make short-work of those 1" silk domes!
Cheers

How do those BX5a's compare with the M-Audio CX5's what I gott? |

Primary: KRK Rokit 5 G2s. They flatter the sound somewhat but they're more than accurate enough for VO work.
Secondary: Yamaha NS10s with a Bryston 3B power amp. They sound awful, just like they should. I do check mixes on these. The wife (the real VO talent in the family) never uses them; hell, I don't think she knows how to switch over.
Headphones: Sennheiser HD280s. They're hyped, and flattering on everything from VO to music, but they're a great way to check details. |

After browsing this thread and getting some good ideas from what others are using, I decided to upgrade a bit from my admittedly cheap existing monitors. Just ordered these, with stands. Will report on them once I hear them in action:
