I am always amazed by what I learn that the folks here do.

Leonardo da Vinci… most think of him as an artist, he thought of himself as an Engineer.

I would be truly interested to learn the various skills we have.

I have been paid to be a caretaker. It ended up being payment to enhance the lives of people who had been sentenced to boredom and solitude. While it wasn't part of my job description, it felt fantastic to do.

OK Ed, let's see, I will list my paid and unpaid jobs:

Theater usher, donut maker, radio newscaster, waitress, pretzel maker/store manager, opera/classical singer, folk singer, grocery cashier, bank teller, phone surveys, pet shelter volunteer, car salesperson, clerical worker, software tester, project manager, nonprofit board member/grant writer/president, business analyst, Mom. And voice talent (hi Karl).

I play the guitar so badly that I just can't bring myself to list it above… even though I did inflict it on the public a number of times.

Edited to say that I left out that awful summer job of heat sealing and sewing industrial filters at the factory. Oy. And then, I am not sure how I forgot to list here that having studied broadcast journalism, I did my stint in radio as a news reporter/director at a podunk station after college. You know, the kind of glamourous, college-grad job that pays so well you have to supplement your income by working weekends at the local restaurant to pay the bills!

I am a chorus teacher and youth minister. I have been paid to be a singer, band director, announcer, Disney store asst. manager, French horn instructor, marching instructor, waiter, cocktail waiter, bartender, actor, survey taker, (It was only a dollar and I was young - needed the money), and voice talent (back atcha)

Edited to include: Hotel night auditor, hotel night manager, desk clerk, circulation zone manager, outside sales manager, and telemarketing manager for the Tallahassee Democrat, housekeeping director for a private dormitory at FSU, paper slinger, then redelivery driver for the Atlanta Journal/Constitution, AMWAY/Quixtar IBO (no longer), and researcher. I guess I had blocked those out of my mind...

Unpaid (monetarily, anyway) I am a dad to two, husband to one, and father of two children-of-fur, cook. I've been a limo driver, designated driver, and children's choir director.

I don't do it unless I can have fun at it.

I went to college for theater, so, of course, I've waited tables. Lots of tables.

But I actually found my perfect "real job" (you know, the job you have till you "make it" in the arts) a few years out of college -- I became certified to tutor children with learning disabilities. First I worked through a service, but in a few years I had enough students through word of mouth to work on my own. I really loved my kids -- I started with many of them in 4th or 5th grade, and stayed with them through graduation... This also taught me a lot about running a business -- keeping track of expenses, billing, taxes, etc.

I haven't had a student in probably ten years, but if for some reason I had to give up acting, I would go back to tutoring in a heart-beat.

During high school, I worked building school bus bodies, was an aircraft sheet metal worker (on C-130s) as a civilian for the Air Force
and as a Keebler Elf baking Pecan Sandies and Zesta saltines.
When I went to college, I got a degree in Speech Pathology & Audiology (speech and hearing therapist).
After college, I went into the Air Force and was a radio/TV specialist with the American Forces Radio & TV Service in Thailand.
After that TV cameraman, TV audio engineer, hotel A/V specialist, day care center facilities manager,
then back to TV audio engineer and struggling voiceoverist. I can't decide what I want to be when I grow up.

I am qualified (rated) to fly an Airbus A321 but no one I know has an Airbus A321 so I usually walk or cycle, except when I don't.

Okay, I'll play.

Trained as a teacher (K-6) back as an undergraduate at the University of Colorado. Also studied photography and what would now be called media production. Early in my college career I actually studied music history; took the education degree so that I'd have something to fall back on when music history jobs didn't come through.

Taught exactly a half year before realizing that while I loved the kids, I couldn't stomach the educational politics. Moved to Kentucky for a year, worked at Eastern Kentucky University as a student recruiter, before moving back to Colorado to work as a freelance writer. That lasted about six months before I took a job as a newspaper writer and editor for the Denver Post on the day that Ronald Reagan was shot.

Spent a few years doing that, managing to survive two ownership changes, but not the third. So, then went back to graduate school at CU to study astronomy. Also managed to pick up a masters' degree in science journalism. Spent some years as a planetarium lecturer, then moved to Massachusetts for 12 years, worked four of those years as a science magazine editor (Sky & Telescope, SkyWatch), co-authored two books on astronomy, co-edited several others. I've written 40+ documentary scripts on astronomy, plus many articles for magazines and newspapers on the same subjects. I now specialize in astronomy outreach through our videos, and I spend five to eight weeks a year onboard cruise ships as an "entertainment astronomer".

Studied acting in Boston for a few years, began doing VO when someone asked me to read for a part. That-- and a desire to make my scripts easy for actors to work with -- was what propelled me to take the acting classes.

Paid jobs: candy store clerk (high school), fry cook (high school), waitress (college), plastics company assembly line worker (college), planetarium lecturer, newspaper reporter, writer, editor, Web content developer, video producer, and now I'm currently CEO of a video production company that my DH and I have run since the late 1970s. I still write and produce, still do VO, and daily take care of various brush fires that flare up business-wise.

Unpaid: Volunteer actor in a troupe that produces some of the best Star Trek radio show episodes on the Web. It's called "Star Trek: Outpost" and I'm currently playing a female Klingon pirate. It's definitely not my normal persona, but she's a lot of fun to do. Well, maybe she could teach me something about being a CEO.

A few years ago I realised I had stopped learning so I chose to learn how to fly. My choice was as much about the academic side as it was about being Biggles. I went from a Piper Tomahawk to Cessna C172 which was kitted out for the training and skills testing of aspiring commercial pilots.

While on my voyage of education I was involved in the production (voice bits) on a DVD which would train pilots how to fly the A319/320/321 the company way as a major airline here was dumping their fleet of 737s. The head of thingy was a TRE (Type rating examiner) Captain and called me one day and asked me if I would like to piggy - back his crew's training, which I did.

My first official trip to be "signed off" on the aircraft was between Aberdeen and Stavanger. Although under supervision the trainee has to behave as captain. Having walked around the aircraft I boarded and was greeted by Enke, the senior flight attendant.

"Good morning, your are our captain today?" she beamed (very Norwegian accent)

"Yeah.........something like that. Hello, I'm Philip" I grinned.

Bagged groceries, worked at an egg ranch in CA, irrigator & stall mucker at the 3 Rings Ranch(racehorsies), a glazier & mirror guy and construction.

But mostly, always in the arts. It's in my family. I designed, manufactured and sold hi-end masks to the Disney parks for several years after high school, had my own sign/graphic design shop while raising my daughter by myself (my favorite job).

Designed, sculpted, and voiced audio-animatronic characters for theme parks. Custom manufactured "wearable character" costumes. At 16, I was taught the process of prosthetic fx makeup by Oscar-winner John Chambers, the creator of the original Planet of the Apes makeup.

Always did the voice thing. Started getting paid for it with some celebrity impression radio spots for KUAU on Maui.

In addition to VO, along with my wife, I'm a pageant coach for the Miss & Mrs.America, Miss USA, and other systems in which young women wear glass hats.
