Hello folks. My name's Grant. A warm welcome to you from Cape Town!

Even though I don't know any of you from Adam, and vice versa, I must already thank you for an incredible wealth of information here that has proven to be very helpful to me.

In no small way due to the insight I've gained from this forum, I've ALMOST got my starting rig clarified:

Macbook Pro
Shure X2U
Mic: Either the MXL V88 or the Studio Projects B1

I came very close to going with the Shure PG42USB, but in the end, I like the idea of investing in a USB interface right from the start that makes it easy to upgrade/change to any other XLR mic down the line.

Thanks again for all the pearls of wisdom! I look forward to communicating with everyone.

Ciao for now! Grant Smile

Welcome aboard.

As you have already reviewed a lot (from your post) the folks here are a wealth of information and a great bunch of characters.

I am curious, why the B1? Don't get me wrong, I am simply wondering about your thinking process. Have you tried any other microphones?

Which recording/editing program are you thinking of using?

Glad to have you on board the board.

Hi Frank, Bob and Jonah. Thanks for the welcome.

Frank, I included the B1 in my final list for the following reasons:

1) As a number of people on this forum have expressed, I'm also of the opinion that the degree of natural talent and work ethic a person has is much more important than the choice of mic. Therefore, almost any decent condenser mic should be able to provide satisfactory results with some tweaking, if necessary.

2) Since I'll be buying the mic solely based on the reviews I've read of it (I won't have a chance to try before I buy), I've read enough good things about it to make me willing to take the leap of faith. I've read that it's not that different in quality (if at all) from mics like the C1 and CS1. And again, it's up to the VO artist in question to get the best they can out of it.

3) The B1 is half the price (or less) of the C1 and CS1, so given the fact that's its comparable to it's siblings in audio quality, that saving is a significant factor in my thought process.

Right now, I'm thinking of using either Garageband or Audacity.

So, that's what's been going on in my head. Smile

Hi there Todd and Ed. Much appreciated!

By the way, to any and everyone...once I'm up and running and have a demo clip put together that I'm happy with, is a site like Voices123.com a worthwhile place to sign up to?

Good reasoning Grant.

The B1 could use some re-voicing (a new capsule, capacitors, resistors, remove the inner mesh of the headbasket, etc.) as it tends to a bit sibilant. This is a known problem with most Chinese mics. All in all the B1 IS a good mic for the price. Do get a good pop filter to go along with the mic as it can help attenuate the sibilance a bit.

Audacity is a good program which will allow you to edit better than GB and has more tricks and toys to play with as you become familiar with the interface.

Again, welcome to the VO-BB.

Welcome aboard Grant! Your question about Voice123 has been answered a zillion times here. I recommend doing a Search to find our group wisdom/opinions.

Click on the Search button above and when you're there try these search terms separately: P2P, Voice123, V123.

You'll find many threads where you'll find very strong pros and cons and much in between. Only you can make up your own mind.

Frank, thanks for the pointers. Would you personally choose the V88 over the B1?

In fact, while I'm on the topic, I'd be very interested to get some current opinions on the top 3 condenser mics under the $250 mark, from anyone who's kind enough to give it. I have searched the forum as previously mentioned, but it would be great to get the latest thoughts. Opinions change with time and experience of course.

Hi Diane! Thank you kindly. Smile I'm sure I will.

Hi Bruce. Thank you for the welcome. And of course, you're right about the search. I should've done that to begin with. Smile
