I didn't list all the weird entertainment-related things I've done for money, because it's all filed under "actor"... But two of the stranger jobs I've had are:
-- I ran a murder mystery entertainment business for about 6 or 7 years. Corporations hired me, and I hired the actors to attend their parties and play characters in the mystery. The mysteries were lightly scripted/mostly improv, and very fun because the party-goers weren't aware they were in a mystery -- they just thought some very strange people were at the party. Then someone died.
-- My husband and I performed in a musical kids show at the zoo one summer. Five shows a day... and it was free to the public. We wouldn't have to do the show if no one showed up, so we would peek out at the people contemplating entering the arena five minutes before show-time and mentally will them to walk away... And yes, we did lots of shows for two or three people -- we would then personalize all the songs with their names in them... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

Ok, this'll be the most boring list of them all, but here goes!
- Assistant in college's psychology department (work-study)
- College dorms cleaner (summer after freshman year; let's just say people are NASTY and leave it at that)
- Temp secretary at various NYC companies during the next 2 summers
- Child protection social worker in NYC (upper East Side and Spanish Harlem; guess which sent virtually no reports of child abuse in the course of a year? But, not because it didn't happen. Lots of fun though for this little woman walking around Harlem on my lonesome late into the night!)
- Graduate assistant in clinical psychology department (teaching undergrads the joys of intro psych and, later, research writing skills. Oy! Wrangling rats was easier)
- Secretary in real estate office
- Donated blood/plasma and served in way too many experimental studies (paid for my tuna and cracker meals during grad school)
- Clinical psychologist in a state psychiatric hospital for children and teens x 5 yrs
- Consultant clinical psychologist (i.e., paper pusher) for federal disability program ("The Job From Hell") x 5 yrs
- Escaped to Ireland 5 yrs ago to get as far as possible from the JFH and ended up in an outpatient mental health clinic for kids and their parents (guess which make me want to pull my hair out?)
- Proofreader for ebook romance publisher (unpaid but satisfies my inner grammar nazi)
- Voiceover artist x 1 year (finally, something fun!) _________________ Arlene Cooke

That is just awesome Kristin!
Ok here goes, I'll try to do this more or less chronologically in an attempt to remember it all. Much of it is/was concurrent. None followed any logical progession. It all just happened.
Counter girl at an upper west side (NYC) pastry shop.
Receptionist
Fabric Sorter at a clothing design company (do you know how many shades of red there are? ack!)
Manager of the Standing Order Dept at an academic publisher (I was the only one IN the Standing Order Dept. ) What was cool was at the time we were selling DaVinci's Codex Atlanticus and I still have the sales brochure.
Server at a beach bar and hotel in Southern Spain.
Crocheter of shawls sold on consignment in Spain and in the Kasbah/medina in Morocco.
Film Booker at a TV film distributor - and manager of the SouthEast Asian Dept. (you guessed it - I was the only one IN the SouthEast Asian Dept. - what is it they say? All title, no bucks?)
Coat check girl at upscale Italian Restaurant.
PR Assistant for a motion picture film distributor at the Cannes Film Festival and at the MIFED Film Market in Milan.
Production Assistant on some not so great movies in Madrid.
Extra on a Spanish TV series - that I recently found out turned out to be a huge hit - which caused the demise of the tiny fishing village in Andalucia I lived in. They now have an English language radio station. ~sigh~.
Assistant to the owner of a motion picture distribution company in Paris.
More assisting at Cannes and MIFED.
Administrative assistant to motion picture distributor in NYC.
Manager of the educational division of a TV film distributor and film sales company in Mexico City.
Documentary production assistant in Mexico City.
Video Editor, Post Production Supervisor and Assistant Director on TV programs in Mexico City.
Translator of album (you know, LP's???) liner notes for record company.
Production Coordinator and talent wrangler of annual live music show.
We get to my first dip into VO. An English narration handed to me by a friend of the Exec Producer of the TV show I was working on in Mexico because I was the only person they knew who spoke English. I'm sure it was less than stellar. They paid a lot of money tho'
Occasional work at the NYU registration desk.
Helper-outer at PBS fund drives.
Tape Op and assistant video editor at Commercial production house in NYC.
Second dip into VO - doing the translations and VO for Spanish versions of some of the English spots produced. That's when I realized the joy of getting paid twice as much for one spot as I made in a week in the tape room.
Video editor for cable production of the plays put on by Festival Latino - Shakespeare festival.
More VO
Freelance tape op/video editor.
Radio traffic reporter - first in Spanish, then in English - backwards as most of my life.
Airborne traffic reporter. I loved flying.
Co-host at some of my traffic stations - First time on stage with a radio station I was presenter of awards to artists at a sold out concert at Madison Sq. Garden. No pressure.
News anchor
Unpaid but not unappreciated member of negotiating teams, due to that pesky habit I have of saying what I think.
Continuing VO
Business anchor
Frequent Co-host of news magazine program - interviewing really interesting people.
Another first, on camera and a little bit of talkie a few words in a movie.
VO
There you have it. A loooong list. A life of serendipity. May not have made the most money or followed a particularly lucrative path for most of it but I can't remember ever being bored. Well, actually, yeah, toward the end of the traffic reporting stint. |

Ha, yes indeed - when I was a radio news reporter I was called the News Director of the small station I worked at, which actually meant I was the entire reporting and announcing staff as well as host of the morning news show. All for the grand salary of $10,000/year!
…well, to be fair, the owner of the radio station did occasionally contribute some [rather gossipy-sounding] "news articles" on occasion when events were simultaneously happening, sinceI couldn't be in two places at once. Those were, of course, expected to be broadcast wholesale and uncritically - ahem, as I learned after my offended, young journalistic sensibilities had led me to edit one of those gems. _________________ jen@jengosnell.com
