I listened to Pat Fraley and Scott Brick talk about this very topic last night at SAG Foundation VO Summit on long form VO. Neither of them use punch and roll because it pulls you from the flow, out of your character. Then again, neither of them edit their own books, either.
How many of you use this technique on fiction? Non-fiction?

My last two books I used punch and roll with PT. For me it required the Digidesign PT keyboard which is whisper quiet and once I got the hang of it, I saved a ton of time (about a third) in recording. I can understand why it would not be preferential for everyone but it works for me. My goal is to finish a ten hour book in ten days.

Good point George! I hear what they're saying about being pulled out of character. I think that falls under the ideal world area. In an ideal world, audio book narrators would have an engineer and a director (and be paid more). The reality is that we need to be as efficient as possible.

I've done it both ways, and to be honest, I don't think it has to pull you out of character - you just have to get used to it. Performers playing on stage, film actors dealing with lights/camera-men...they all have to deal with distractions, it's part of the job Smile

You tune that part out and focus on character.

I don't use punch-and-roll for two reasons. The first being the breakup of the flow, and with as many little flubs as I make, I'd be stopping every 30 seconds to re-start. But the other is that I want to hear every piece I've recorded afterwards anyway. There seems to always be 'something' that happens, whether it's a mental glitch where maybe I said "she" instead of "he" and never noticed it, or a technical issue such as a digital hiccup. Yeah, it takes longer, but quality is, of course, the #1 concern.

I use Sound Forge be cause I like it and I can throw a marker down when I need to, but that not the most relevant part of this suggestion.

When I am doing the tracking for my radio program, and when I say something, wait I am always saying something that didn’t fit. Well any time that happens I take a pause hit the marker (M key) and go again. Like Scott said don’t throw away any thing until you are finished, then maybe Scott didn’t say those very words, but I got that meaning.

Many are the time when I need one word or bit that is in the same moment as the read I am working on.

Market it then edit it, or hire some one who will and believe me they will appreciate that the whole read flubs and all are there.

I'm using Adam's punch n roll technique and it's been a HUGE time saver. Along the lines of Jonah's 1/3rd reduction. If QC is an issue then either ask the publisher to do it, or farm it out (plug: My team will do it for $25 per finished hour). Your time is worth more.

I think I'm going to give this a try with Cubase, I'm sure it has similar features to support it.

Adam, once I've mastered the technique, I'll put up a blog post and link yours. I'm very interested to see if this can improve my throughput- I'm a current member of the rolling record+dog clicker school. Laugh

Yeah - let me know if you get Cubase working with it! People on other forums/places are wanting it for SoundForge as well....I might combine instructions into one document for multiple programs later on if people contribute.

Next up - I'm working on a way to replicate what Word2Wav does in Audition...should be possible!

I'm talking to Thomas at TwistedWave about implementing this feature in a future update. He's been a bit distracted for a year created an entire web-based version of TW, which is now in beta.
Still, it seems more conducive to acting to be away from the computer while reading, and just drop a click or a marker with the iOS remote. But hey, I ain't a VO, so whada I know?

BTW, this won't work in Audition Cs 5.5 as far as I can tell because neither the "add to marker list" OR "preroll audition" options are available.
