I didn't want the dreaded Thread-Jacker rank.
Quote: | #1 I cannot seem to configure the software to play (output) through my computer's speakers...only back through the headphones from my M-audio Firewire solo. |
It's playing back through the firewire to the interface. That the way it is-- Pro Tools records and plays through its own hardware, period.
I take the headphone feed and run that to my mixer and play THAT through my monitors.
Quote: | #2 When recording -- I have to "mute" the playback through my headphones, or I get a nasty echo (latency?). That's not so bad, but it doesn't allow me to use one of the neat features of Pro-Tools: the keyboard /stop/play/reverse/record/ "hot" keys. I have to first take the "mute" off, then back on.... it just totally defeats the ease of the hot-keys. |
May not be "Latency"-- it might be feedback. Are you using any outboard gear in your mic chain? _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Deirdre...
Thanks!
Man, is that just a huge deficiency in PT software design or what!!?? Or are they just so big in the industry, they can just build it that way, or is there an advantage to them not allowing the configuration of output through the computer? I don't get that. So be it, though.
As for #2...I've thought it could be feedback instead of latency...it sounds about the same, but to answer your question, I guess I'll need you to tell me what you mean by "outboard gear". I run my mic into a PreSonus TubePre pre-amp, then into my M-audio Firewire...then into my computer -- that's it.
Thanks DB

I understand where Frank's coming from....I really do...
If I had it to do all over again, I probably wouldn't buy Pro-Tools right out of the starting blocks.... but since I spent at least $250 for all this impressive software code....I'm darned well gonna make sure I use it...!!!

Dave,
How important is it to you to be able to hear other stuff through your computer speakers? Other than what you've recorded in ProTools? If that's not an issue, then why not plug your computer speakers into the headphone jack of your M-Audio box? Just be careful to mute (or unplug) your speakers before you start recording. _________________ Be well,
