Am about to demo a Red 7 in my VO studio. Pairing it with my U87 & 416, Have been using a 737 for quite a while and am tweaking the rig.
Any love for the Red 7?

Hey Mike
If you do processing to your audio it seems like a good test drive. The Red 1 is a great pre. The 7 has the extra processors so if you are processing the signal instead of just sending it off raw to an engineer or editor it seems be a personal preference of Avalon vs Focusrite. |

I don't own one but one of the local studios I occasionally use puts me on a 416 run thru a Red 7... not sure how much of the processing features he's using but whatever he's doing with it sounds smooth as butter. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

here are some samples of what I do:
The "Stryker" cut on the narration demo on my site was done on a 416 > Red 7.
Several other narrations were done on a TLM49 > Control 24, which has on board Focusrite mic pres.
The Joe's cut was done on a 416 > Avid Pre 8...which was a surprise to me. I asked the engineer at the studio where I recorded that what signal chain he had set up...the Avid Pre 8 was his only mic pre...sounded great.
Mummy and Complicated trailers are both on a U87ai > 737, which is my standard set up for trailer reads.
The commercials sample is all over the map...too many studios and mic setups to remember. I think the RC Cola piece was done on an old 87 straight into an MCI console and whatever mic pre's were in that board. Several 414's in there too.

If you have the dough, it's an awesome unit. My client Howard Parker has one for his 416 and U87 both. No EQ, but you shouldn't need it with a properly tuned room. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

The BEST I think I have ever sounded was in a session that used the Gefell M930 (which i have since purchased) and a Focusrite Red pre. How much do they run?
I'm happy for now with my ISA One, but will someday upgrade. The Hardy M1 was at the top of my want list, but I'd consider the Red as well. Depending on how much $$$$ of course. _________________ Best regards,

I like the Red 7. My first choices are a Maag Audio PreQ4 with Airband (Lunchbox "500" series) or the Burl B2 Bomber. The new Burl will be on the list to try soon.
I would however caution use of the Red 7 with a 416 as the compression effect factor from the mic and the pre can be ugly if and when processing is used.
Neither of the choices are cheap (if you add the lunchbox to the Maag Audio PreQ4 with Airband) but are worth the price.
