The simple fact is that no one nowadays is going to take someone off the streets and supply free training (apart from the military maybe). I grew up in an aviation based community where a couple of my contemporaries joined BA (then BEA/BOAC) as teenage apprentices and ended up as flight crew (pilots/flight engineers etc). Those days are gone, especially in the air transport industry where the market is flooded with ex-military aircrew (especially in the US).
Corporations want people ready to hit the ground running with no (or minimal) training costs. The only investment that's going to be made in you... is by you. While this is a fairly bogus "news" story (it is The Sun, after all). It's a great illustration of how the system works now. All power to the girl for going for it and investing in her own career. I hope she manages to pay off her training costs in a reasonable time.
On the other hand... this story could only have made the news in the UK where the cost of education is reasonable (when compared to the US) and this girl's investment in herself is the exception. My step-daughter is in continuing education here in the US ... degree, masters, pre-med, medical school. Her own investment in her education is immense, and the only way to do it is with (so-called) subsidized loans. Even with working as much as she can and getting as many grants as possible, she's going to have racked-up at least $250K of debt (probably twice that) that'll need to be paid back once she graduates. This may be fine if she specializes in diseases of the rich, but her goal is to join the WHO or Doctors Without Borders!
A great way to start a career, huh? But Philip's point is well made... a few grand here and there on studio and tech equipment and maybe some more cash dropped for on-going coaching and conferences is nothing compared to the investment some people are making in their futures. _________________ Bish a.k.a. That's a lot of moolah, and considering what beginning small airline pilots get paid these days, it's going to take her a while to pay that off.
But the most shocking thing about the article was seeing a pretty young woman in a Brit tabloid with all of her clothes on.

Great press release from Flybe (the airline). Kate's starting pay will be around $40,000 a year.
People keep wittering in our business about pro, trained, qualified VOs and also comment on the low ballers. If like Kate we had $140,000 of debt to pay off I wonder how many people would be able to buy us for $20 a job.
Our problem is not training or qualifications as such but the fact that there are no recognised or genuinely valued surstifficuts for the likes of us.
The running gag between me and some CBS promo producers is "here I think we can benefit from use of the Double Iranian Pause". About a year ago I was asked what I had done that weekend and I told the story of a trip to a VO masterclass in LA at a cost of $799 to learn how to apply and use ..yes..you've guessed it ..The Double Iranian Pause. |

Philip, you should consider yourself lucky to have had the chance to learn a technique as advanced as the Doublel Iranian Pause (it's certainly not for the uninitiated or the faint of heart) for the bargain-basement tuition of just $799.
Will you be following the usual course of affairs and continuing your education with the next lesson in the series: The Lithuanian Lip Smirk? _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

I did try to sign up for that but my teeth failed the suitability interview. Too British apparently. |

Ok, so I just posted about being an easy 5 seconds under on a script I'm training on, and NOW I hear about the Double Iranian Pause?
What is it?!? I must have it! How much will you take for it? More importantly, does it mean I get to...er..._have_ to buy a new microphone?
Seriously though, I think between the corporate attitude toward training and the current pricing structure of higher education, an unstoppable force is about to hit the immovable object. The result isn't going to be pretty. |

If training and education costs get too high, then the public will have to make do with substitutes. I know Philip didn't want to mention it, but the Double Iranian can be (in most cases) substituted by the Double Glaswegian (far cheaper). Most people cannot tell the difference between a heavy Scottish, and medium Iranian brogue when it comes to the pauses. That being said, the timing is just a tad different, with the Glaswegian being measured as the actual time it takes for a forehead to be propelled forward and make contact with the bridge of the nose opposite. The Iranian is a smidgeon longer. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

It's a Classical Arabic nuance used to over empahasise a point needing no empahasis without highlighting the content or punctuation. Requires breath control and fairly sensible trousers. |

Me too, Elaine.
I just invested in a closet full of entirely frivolous trousers which came highly recommended in that last weekend workshop. _________________ Dangerous.

I got close to the Mic for that Proximity effect
just looking for some side and back reject
wearin my very coolest trousers.. not pants
VO that makes you move and groove and Dance
Then Phillip says put down that four sixteen
And Fat and Sassy says it won't be clean
Use that 87 and don't use no compression
Just not the AI that's really depressin
Then I know to really move like Jagger
And not be known as a 123 Bragger
I gotta promise to never read Gearslutz
Get Bass Traps and sell those cuts
I gotta Market my fingers to the Bone
Work the Web and work the Phone
Vacation in Samoa and not SaVoa
Cause Radio DJ's aren't down with the Showa (apologies) _________________ There are rules to the Universe. Learn them and prosper. www.HumbleVoiceover.com |
