Hi all,

As I mentioned in another thread, I've started a conversation with a local internet startup to do VO for them (carcarekiosk.com - they're currently doing their own) and they asked for samples.

So I quickly put together a few things in a demo here: http://soundcloud.com/swduncan/narration-demo

I can do better and will, but I'd appreciate any feedback.

Here's a motto I try to go by as much as I can:

If I can do better, I will. Why settle for less in some sort of interim?

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Five things:

Enunciate better. Get your lips out of the way as they slightly muffle some words.

Sound like you believe it. You're reading to people who are interested in your topic (or should be).

Practice breath control. You're taking breaths in the middle of sentences where you really shouldn't need to. Also, one of your cuts ended with a breath like it was in the middle of a sentence. Huh?

When you finally get the cuts you want I hope you'll edit them more closely together. Two second gaps are not desirable. Listen to other narration demos to get ideas.

Variety is the spice of life. All of your cuts have the same, flat read. But don't change pitch and energy just because I said so. Find a read that matches the material you're reading.

+1 on the breath control. it almost sounds like you ran as quickly as you could to the mic - then started reading. like frankie says - relax. also watch your mouth clicks - it could be something you're doing - or it could be just "happening" we all have an issue with it sometimes - just hear it when it's there and correct it. keep on pluggin' - you'll get it.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. The reads are flat, and I am breathless, but I will work on both.

I'd also be interested what audio quality/room sound issues I need to address.
