We are currently translating our products in multiple languages. One of our talents lives in Spain. We need a solution that will allow us to get his audio back to our Audio Engineer here in Texas. Since there is a 7 hour time difference between our locations it would not be practical to have a live session. He currently has an iMac. Any suggestions on how we can get a good quality recording from him to us or best practices doing this, would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi David -
I would suggest using a file transfer service. I use WeTransfer.com all the time. You can send a very large file (up to 2GB) for free.

I also use WeTransfer.com
He can record the audio in 16bit 44.1K.wav or .aif and then .zip the files & then upload the files to WeTransfer.com which will send you a link to download them.
Or...do you have an FTP server that he could login to?
In that case you can give him the host address, create a user name & password for him and he could use an FTP program like WsFTP or CuteFTP to transfer the files directly from his computer to your server.
Hope this helps! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

I am becoming a fan of DropBox. You get their little software widget and when you have a file to share you just drag it into the Drop Box on your desktop and minutes* later they have it in their desk top DropBox. It's easy. And it's free too.
YouSendIt has been failing to finish an upload about every fourth time now.

I like DropBox also. It works like a trooper and is simple to use.

I use the free version of YouSendIt. Their constant attempts to upsell me to a paid plan are a minor annoyance, but worth enduring for the convenience. Only once did I have a file that was too large for the freebie version. I had to split it in two and send each half separately. Not a big deal. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

All,
Thank you for your replies. It looks like I need to add to my subject what mic, interface, software or any other needed equipment would we need to get good quality audio on his end? Thanks again.
P.S. I'm new to this site so if this is not the proper way to add additional info. to my subject, please advise.

Ah— you are looking for a whole recording rig!
Don't worry about "proper", we just want to help you get set up.
I'll move this query to "GEAR". _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Um, how about using an established talent with at home studio? Or, rent a studio by the hour and do the recording there ... a lot easier than starting from scratch. _________________ Regards,

Hi David!
I'm with Jacob on this one, if it's just for one job then it will be much cheaper and much easier to just rent a pro studio by the hour.
If it's for long term regular jobs then I suggest that you direct the talent here so we can help him better.
It will take time and money. Time because he'll basically have to learn to become an audio engineer so he can use the gear and the recording software; and money because quality gear doesn't come cheap. Depending on what level of audio quality you can work with, there will be various options, knowing that a cheap microphone will still cost at least $200 and you have to add cables, headphones, mic stand, sound interface, room treatment etc... it adds up quickly.
It is possible to do, we've all done it here, but it won't happen over night. _________________ www.clairedodin.com |
