It's why I haven't auditioned for too many things there lately. Too much work up front, too many authors and the company expecting a VO to work for free on the chance the book might sell. Some of the audition material has really been awful. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

I agree, CC. I think I did one audition there the past two months -- even the decent paying titles are few and far between except for the porn, er, erotica. And I get one or two requests to audition a month from royalty share authors, so I don't think we're alone. I have looked just out of curiosity at the titles for male voices, and they seem to have a little better selection. _________________ Diane

I still log on once every week or two looking either for stipend jobs or the pay-for-production from $200-$400 per hour. The selection is * okay * although I'll see a LOT of offers from the same author, whose subject matter isn't something I'm particularly comfortable or suited for narrating. But what really irks me is the huge number of titles that seem NEVER to get cast. At least you'll get a note saying the title is no longer available once it's cast, but I've got probably 20 or 30 auditions dating back a year that are still open. What gives with that? _________________ Scott R. Pollak

I have some of those too, Scott. My take on it is that these are people who are new to audiobooks are afraid to make a decision or an author having labored over this work for years and know each word so well, have their own inner voices ingrained in their heads that they can't accept anyone with a slightly different read. Some will eventually just give up on the idea completely, while others keep hoping someday that elusive voice will audition and they'll be blown away by how perfect it is -- and so don't pull the title. Since they have no real pressing reason to move forward they just let it sit. I personally know of an author who has not found just that right voice for his book -- now going on 5 years. _________________ Diane

I'd like to read a book, but I'm looking for an author that has my exact voice. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I haven't auditioned for anything at ACX for months, so I was very surprised to get an email from them last night offering me the job of producing a book -- no audition necessary --,but "hurry! it's a limited time offer" ... oooookay, so I check on the title. It's a three hour royalty share porn, er, erotica. Uh-huh. No thank you. _________________ Diane

I still want a copy of "fifty shades of grey" as read by Gilbert Gottfried.
Porn read by William Shatner might be fun too! _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...
