In looking at the latest birthday thread, I noticed the word "belated" used a couple of times and it made me wonder, is "belated" ever used in any context other than with tardy birthday greetings? I know it can be, but is it?
Similarly, does anybody other than a sommelier (wine bottle) or a baseball pitcher (wild pitch) ever uncork anything? _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I belatedly uncorked the walls of my hallway once. I'd put up some 1/4" cork tiles as a pin-board for temporary display of some photographs, and they had deteriorated a little before I got around to removing them. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

A bit of quick research leads me to believe that belated and belatedly are used to describe any event that occurs after it's scheduled or best time, but in conjunction with birthdays is far and away the most common usage.
I imagine uncorked has been used as in saying someone has come unhinged or unglued, but that could lead to a terrible waste of a beverage.

One thing I've noticed, with regard to birthday greetings, is that most folks tend to use belated incorrectly, offering a late greeting by saying "Happy belated birthday."
It's not the birthday that's belated, it's the greeting. "A belated happy birthday" is really what is meant. _________________ Mike

Hopefully, this will change.

Belatedly - way after the driver who cut you off is far down the road. |

Melissa.
Belated stream of obscenities as the other driver moves out of earshot.
Never happen.
Ever.
She's far too quick for that.

That's right, Peter. I'm WAY to quick to ever let anyone cut me off. |

@Lee,
Many moons ago, I owned a '69 Camaro, which was at that time, a pretty hefty musclecar. Disconnecting the muffler from the headers made a whole lot of noise, which was of course, the entire point.
(In California at least), this was known as driving "uncorked."
Please add this to your uncorked pile. _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"
