VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I have been getting a snap crackle or pop like sound lately in ProTools 8 when I punch in with the space bar. It doesn't always happen. It will often just show up during a session. I can't even edit them out because a mouse click will cause a new one when I highlight a pop to remove it. Power down, rest and reboot can help sometimes but not always. I reinstalled the program a couple days ago and that seemed to help for quite a few hours of narration. But after two hours of an audiobook read today, it is back.
"I can't go on like this! Will someone please help me?" the narrator cried plaintively.

Are you using any plug-ins?

Yonie –

No Plug-ins. I have a very simple bare bones kind of set-up. Mic + M-Box 2 Mini + laptop PC. The only software add-on is the MP3 export option. I haven’t even applied the .01 upgrade. I have had this setup unchanged for two years at least and it has been solid; hence my frustration.

OK. New information. This problem only shows up when I am close to the mic. Also the waveform for room tone goes wacky. When I back away, waveform returns to near flat and popping stops. Is my mic going bad or is my M-box the culprit? I am essentially down until I figure this out, and deadlines are looming. Any advice is appreciated. Time is of the essence especially since I will have to make any potential purchases on the internet, becauseI live just outside Outer Exurbia.

Sounds like a grounding issue. Try swapping your mic cable out.

Looks like the computer was starting to say goodbye to me. Had a blue screen yesterday but it worked ok after reboot. Then it didn’t recognize my external HDD. That was enough. The new computer is nice, of course, and I didn’t lose any data or PT sessions. But at the risk of hijacking my own thread, I am beginning to wonder about vulnerability. I am kind of a noob, but I am a fairly busy noob. I work just about every day. I have one mic, one DAI, and a laptop. How redundant is redundant enough? How redundant are you?

The Department of Redundancy Department is very important for the self-employed. Wink

I have two different mics (HH VO:1-A and AT2035), three interfaces (Scarlett 2i2, ONE, and MicPort Pro), and three different softwares to record with (Pro Tools, Twisted Wave, and *cough* Audacity).

If the Mac Mini is ever down, I have a Macbook I can record onto. Or my iPad with Apogee MiC. When I travel, I usually record into TW on the iPad and then edit on my Macbook. Oh, I guess I could use the Alesis ioDock with my HH mic too.

If my Internet at home goes out, I have mobile hotspot on my smartphone. It has saved my butt more than once when visiting our beloved Upper Peninsula.

If there is one thing I learned from my days in IT, redundancy is a good thing.

I'm afraid this reply also shows that I am somewhat of a gadget freak. Smile

They're OK. I'm really not happy with the unit though. It is one of just two interfaces that not compatible with Source Connect. Also, the switches on the front are kinda cheap plastic. I'm definitely looking to replace it at some point. I'd encourage you to get your hands on one at Guitar Center or whatever music store is near you before buying it.

Build quality on the upper range Scarletts seems much better than the 2i2.

But are the pre's just ok, or are they truly Focusrite worthy?
