Had a good convo with one of my e-learning clients today, in which he related that a female VO had solicited him for work, he evidently liked her demo but responded that what she was charging was 2-3x his current VO provider (me) was charging. Now I *KNOW* I am not charging peanuts for my VO (in my case, a 4-figure per-finished-hour rate, but I pro-rate to the quarter hour) so what in the heck is this person charging? She responded with a page and a half diatribe as to how the VO working for him should be bitch-slapped and is not a professional and is wrecking the industry etc, and that SHE is a Professional...Needless to say she is someone I will never be contacting for any of the upcoming work from this and his related provider companies for whom I will be coordinating the VO.
While I agree in principle with her, and have admittedly gotten snippy in the past with unedumacated Craigslist/oDesk/Fiverr-type people seeking cheap VO, is that the way to respond to someone whom YOU have marketed to, when you could conceivably use that info to further research rates and market conditions? This person does not know my rate! Just further sealed that this client is sticking with me for his and the other companies' VOs. So who is the real professional here? Am I missing something and should be charging more? (I don't think so but tell me if I'm offbase, please!!)
Regardless, not the best way to go. _________________ Chris Mezzolesta, Voice Talent

Chris,
There's a right way and a wrong way to go about client education. She chose the wrong way.
Nothing wrong with gracefully pointing out what getting a "pro" will do for you and why paying the extra money is worth it and then leave it to the client to decide.
But, slagging a unknown colleague in the hopes of getting business? That's kinda cheap.

In my limited experience, $1000+ per finished hour for elearning feels about right. If your friend is realizing $2000-3000 or more pfh, then she must be pretty damn good. And I mean at sales, not at narration _________________ Graeme Spicer

That doesn't sound like professional behavior to me. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.
