At a business networking seminar Fraser, a marketing expert (really he is) was talking to a man and asked him about his line of work.
"I'm a motivational speaker" he replied and followed this with lots of jargon.
"So you sell air freshener" said Fraser.
"What do you mean?" asked the Speaker.
"Well, you come into a room full of people with lots of problems causing a stink in their lives and businesses and proceed to spray verbal air freshener all over the place. You have done nothing to help solve the problems, make the smell go away for good, you just added meaningless fragrance."
Fraser is British, indirect, you never quite know what he means ...Mmm there's a stereotype !
What prompted the response Mr Motivation received? He was skint, broke, failing, losing, not succeeding... A motivational speaker who could not get a paying gig speaking motivationally! He needed advice from Fraser to help market himself. What he wanted was Fraser to get him some work. Buy a man a fish you feed him once, teach him to fish and he'll feed himself for life!
Yer man did not want Fraser to teach him to fish, he wanted Fraser to feed him a fish every day. Fine! All he had to do was become a Sea Lion and learn to balance a beach ball on his nose.
How many people in our business are relying on cans of air freshener to remove the stinky stuff from their careers? Most of 'em!
How many people in our business want to become Sea Lions? Most of 'em.
Does anyone want help in order to move their careers along at a faster pace? Many may claim they do but fail to spot the people simply selling cans of air freshener and more importantly when they find somone really able to help they haven't asked themselves "do I REALLY want to have this conversation?" |

On the beach being inflated by a Jock to impress a Cheerleader in a pink bikini.
Distract Jock by shouting "23...45..76..18 ..hut,hut,hut". When he drops into DEEfence position, grab the ball and run.
Phase II - master the art of balancing. |

Philip,
I not only plan to quote you on this, but to streal it outright. It is a very concise and clever way of saying something that many of us have been trying to say for quite some time.
Sadly however, sometimes a little air freshener can produce some results or in many cases, given that the person on the receiving end of the freshening doesn't really know better, it may be perceived that way. Some people are just so bad at what they do that following the advice of a random fortune cookie may offer benefits.
Please keep the parables coming.
Thank you.
