I've been wrestling with the Apogee MiC into TwistedWave/iPad for about a month now. For what they are, and how little they cost, the MiC and TwistedWave do a great job. But I'm still vexed by the muddy bottom end of the finished audio. I realize this is probably just the way it's going to be with the Apogee MiC, but it seems like I should be able to do something with the eq filters. Unfortunately TwistedWave only offers 2 Passes and 2 Shelves, devices I'm not very familiar with.

Does anyone have any solutions you're happy with?

Also any suggestions with the Dynamics Processor would be appreciated.

Finally, there's a big niche just waiting to be filled by some industrious equipment manufacturer...the Apogee MiC desparately needs a clip-on windscreen. Something like http://www.wind-tech.net/Pop_Gard.php only smaller.

Thanks, Jim

Your wish has been granted.

I like the WindTech toys, but here is the original patented wind guard(s), which was bought by WT:

I suggest you purchase a shielded USB cable and check the actual power you are getting through your USB port. Each can affect the normal Chinese capsule's sound of the ApogeeMiC. Also, give a listen to your audio through headphones AND speakers. The phones are the closest to real sound you will get - if they match the sound through the speakers - you are doing well; if not, try to find some speakers which do.

wow.. I've been struggling with the muddiness of the MiC for it seems months.. its so damn convenient, otherwise it would have been long gone...

a normal parametric eq with a hI pass @ 65, cut -5db @ 500Hz, and some sparkle above 6KHz has sort of corrected the problem, but how that translates into the stock TW filters is very filddly... my best guess is that it needs to be processed with the filters 4 times, each with a different setting.. one high pass, one low shelf, and two high shelves..

I've gotten it close, but not really where I'd like it.. I honestly don't trust the MiC for gigs. but auditions in a pinch, sure... pretty overpriced IMHO

I have noticed that the MiC has a pretty pronounced proximity effect. Have you messed with mic technique?

Here is the site for those pop filters:

I love the rectangular aluminum one.

Thank you Frank! I've been googling for this exact windscreen solution for a few weeks and came up empty. I just ordered the little round one.

As far as the second half of your response, the Apogee MiC comes with a USB cable, but I haven't used it because I'm using the MiC with an iPad (it also comes with a IOS cable). I've been comparing scripts recorded via the MiC/TwistedWave/iPad to the same script recorded on my office setup: Rode NTK/ProTools/Mac Mini. (I export a WAV file out of TwistedWave to Dropbox, then import the audio into ProTools.) Needless to say my office setup sounds much better than the iPad setup, but my clients who have received audio recorded on the iPad had no complaints. I just want it to sound as good as it can.

Again, many thanks,

Jim

Jason:
Yes, I've worked the MiC's proximity effect pretty intensely. It achieves some additional bottom end, but it comes with a lot of plosives. Thus my need for a rather diminutive windscreen to match the size of the MiC.

Thanks, Jim

Stay tuned for The Hook Studio's Mike Frenchik's latest creation, still in development, but almost ready for release...

Follow-up: I bought the diminutive round pop filter Frank suggested, which turns out is made by Hook, and it was delivered to our vacation home in Kentucky today. I just tried it out with my iPad/TwistedWave/Apogee MiC. The pop filter allows for just a little tighter proximity to the MiC, which is just what it needs to achieve a little more bottom end without popping.

I also do sweeps radio mixes and "legitimate" song mixes that require multi track. But when I'm away from my home base, and all I'm expecting is single track voice work, this is how I'm traveling. it sure beats hauling around that backpack I referred to recently. And my clients are fine with the results.

Thanks to Frank and Justin and George for the good advice!

Jim

The Apogee MIC plosive - close proximity dilemna - solved - and extremely travel friendly...after fighting with this mic for a couple months, I can now say, with a little eq and such, it has a sort of SM7/RE 20 dynamic sound to it.. not too bad

A 10 minute narration and not one plosive.. SM 58 or similiar foam windscreen

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Windtech-900-Green-Windscreen-900-Series-Ball-Type-1-SM58-/230764508823?pt=US_Stands_Mounts_Holders&hash=item35baa2f697

to secure the bottom of the windscreen to the MIC

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150-Large-Mini-Black-Hair-Rubber-Bands-Braids-Dreads-Elastic-BEST-DEAL-ON-EBAY-/280968598172?pt=US_Hair_Accessories&hash=item416b08929c

laugh, go ahead.. it ******* works.. I'm not kidding.

I'm come to the conclusion that proximity needs to be 6" or less.. otherwise, it's unusable. I've extensively tested further than 6" and its a no go, at least for my voice... which brings up another issue... the stand.

you can either crunch your shoulders and neck to stay on top of the MIC attached to the factory stand and mount, or go this route.

Here's our offering to the Apogee MiC users searching for a pop screen, designed in conjunction with Mike Frenchik of The Hook Studios.
Hope you find it useful. and if you don't want EWABS printed on it, I am sure Mike is happy to sell it to you sans graphics.
Wix has odd page links that break the URL code, so you'll need to copy/paste the entire link below into your browser:
