Anybody using a non-computer driven recording unit for session backup?

Something that can keep going if the computer crashes during a session and deliver an exportable file. Preferably one that can just overwrite and re-use its space, since only in an emergency will its files be needed.

Thanks in adavnce for any suggestions.

seems like an outboard USB drive or even a flash drive should do the job. Something you can just unplug from the damaged computer and stick into another....

Pay no attention to the above, I didn't notice "while recording" Smile

The Tascam DR40 looks like a good bet to me.

+1 on the DR40 --- i use it for field recording on video shoots and it is cherry.

but - what are the odds of the computer dumping during a session? seems pretty remote to me.

Welll.... Todd, the computer hasn't but I've had Audition go haywire and render the track unusable. My CD backup saved my bacon--

Besides, during my former career as a traveling photographer, I was never without backups, because Murphy's Law was often enforced. If something can go wrong, it will. And, believe me, did. When the stobe capacitor exploded with a very loud and resounding BLAM!!!! in the press room at Fenway Park ( the camera assistant dropped a tiny piece of foil from a film wrapper into the strobe contacts) , it just scared the living daylights out of everyone and fried the lighting unit. Was there a backup strobe?--You bet there was!

Thanks for the Tascam solution--that would work. But I forgot to note, that I'd like it to be rack-mountable--there is a Tascam unit that will do that and perhaps that's the ticket

that's pretty cool! a long time ago i used to have a 1-ru case that opened like a briefcase --- if i still had it i'd buy that dude to put inside for no specific reason --- that would be badass.

Thanks Bruce--I do like the velcro solution. Of course, it's also hard to resist the lure of some really strong gaffer tape. We once got some so strong, it ripped the green off a John Deere tractor. We had some "'splainin' to do!"
