I just watched 12 or more movie trailers on the apple download site and the ONLY voiceovers were by actors in the movies.
Has that revenue stream dried up altogether? |

There are only about a dozen people wading in that stream anyway.
Seriously, though, there's been a trend away from the Don L., Hal Douglas "In a world..."-style trailer. Standup comics have been lampooning it as a cliche for years now, and so have the trailers themselves.
The Clerks II trailer I posted a while back makes for another good example. The actual trailer had no VO but plenty of text, making it great practice. There's a certain irony in having used it as a VO exercise, however, since it deliberately leaves out the voice.
Lots of TV commercials follow the same style, but I don't think there's much danger of voiced spots disappearing altogether. Again, even if major-movie trailers follow suit, the odds were against 99% of us ever being in that club anyway. (Not to say that we shouldn't try; just offering a bit of perspective.) _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

If the concept of "no more VO's on Movie Trailers" is true, I am sure Don LaFontaine would be VERY unhappy.
Can't be so, I think it has something to do with the current contracts with VO Talent and apple... apparently apple doesnt want to pay residuals for VO Talent. Edit: See post below... I made a mistake in how I wrote this line...sorry... my interpertation was off...
My latest movie trailer will not go to iPod or iTunes due to the contract... "they won't pay - I won't play".
At least on the apple sites, as it stands today - there will be less "in a world..."; and more CG or text -- its the writing on the screen.
The newest trend in some of the national arenas is to get away from the BIG voices and name moviestars and go toward a "man on the street" sound... maybe we DO have a chance at becoming a DLF of our own caliber.
Now wait six weeks - it will change... [Edit: This idea came up about 15 years ago too... about the time 'Friends" hit the small screen... it went away...]

THREADJACKING AGAIN:
That's also a trend that's becoming very obvious in radio imaging too. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Hmmm. Perhaps we should remember that when we're making that next computer purchase. _________________ Travis

I'd like to see some research into the written opinion on this. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I believe I wrote this wrong... Sorry.
apple wouldn't be paying the residuals... I meant: clients don't want to pay the extra fees associated with being on apples site's. I guess (strictly my opinion) they feel they are already paying enough to be there... I don't know...
Research is definately in order... Get things in writing. Mine has already started... Yours would greatly enhance my finidngs.

Ad agencies try to move things on because a lot of the people in them are more control freaks than creatives. One ad agency director once said "it's my job to tell the client what he wants". Those people come and go but a good voice will stick around for years. No VO on movie trailers? Why not have the most appropriate VO on a movie trailer, it's called casting.
As voice overs we need to ensure that we are able to offer creatives real flexibility. Are you able without doing a character voice to be - The voice with the great pipes, my nightmare, my best friend, my wise counsel? The list goes on.
Forgive me for saying this, no offence is intended. A lot of people who post here are so pre-occupied with what others are doing with their voice over careers to ever get their own off the starting block. A production is not all about YOU but your voice and career is.

I got some "newstalk" radio station imaging that way. They didn't want the "growler" as they put it. I was flattered when the Program Director told me that people called and made positive comments. Sometimes this can be used tactically when two stations are competing in a market. Although, I think things like this are cyclical. |
