I have a new interesting issue in my studio. It seems that on occasion, when I go to turn off my mic to flip on my monitors to edit audio, my computer crashes. Basically, the MBox shuts off, and I receive a warning that ProTools is no longer communicating with my MBox and that I need to save the session. I save the session, and the computer shuts itself down.

I'm on an iMac, using an MBox...mic goes into mic-pre with goes into MBox...USB'd into the computer.

I'm using high end surge protectors, though this does almost feel like an electricity thing.

And by "Feels like", I mean "What the heck is this because I'm at a loss?!"

Thank you in advance my knowledgable friends!!

Maybe one of the switches are starting to fritz out since it happens when you turn a switch off? or the Mbox is going out. Is there a diagnostic tool for Mboxes on the web?

Kara, you mean the iMac receives the "shut down" signal and it shuts down properly, or the power cuts off and when you start it up it says it was shut down improperly? Either way, this is a new one to me!
Where are you "turning off the mic"? Usually a twist of the Mbox Mix knob to the right takes care of the feedback problem.

George- it's shutting down improperly, the power on the Mbox simply turns off- and then I receive the 'ProTools can't communicate with Mbox, please save session" warning. I hit save and the entire computer shuts down. I never had this issue until recently, and I'd say it's happened about a dozen times in this new studio.

I turn the power on and off from my mic-pre which is connected to the Mbox. I'm thinking your solution is best, I'll simply turn down the volume on the mic-pre instead of shutting it on and off.

Still, it's a weird new issue!

First, swap USB cables, if still happens then swap Mboxes... If you are PT9 or higher, try a Scarlett 2i2 instead, best bang for the buck.

Have you tried contacting the Mbox tech support people about this yet?
