Hi all...I've been having computer issues so haven't been on for a while. It will take some time to catch up! You folks have been chatting away as usual and I've missed it....

I was wondering if anyone out there might be interested in helping me get a phone patch set up in my studio. If I understand correctly, it's a matter of directing the signal a different way by re-routing, but I'm not sure how to go about it. If there's someone in the group willing to jump in and help, or if you could refer me to someone who could talk me through it, I would truly appreciate it!

Thanks!

I just set up my studio with a phone patch yesterday, coincidentally. The way I did it was extremely uncomplicated, but that was mostly due to my equipment.

I use an Apogee Duet 2 (Mac) with Skype. Because the Duet is an external audio controller (plugged in via USB) and handles all the audio signals, once I installed Skype it saw it immediately. I just had to tell Skype's preferences section what sources to use for input and output.

So in a nutshell:

1. I bought a Skype telephone number ($18.00 for 3 months of service)
2. Downloaded the program and installed it
3. Told the program what inputs and outputs to use
4. Called my Skype number from my home phone to test

...and voila! It worked like a champ. I just used it on a live session with an out of state studio and it worked flawlessly.

If my setup is far removed from your own, Voxman has a tutorial that might help located here: http://voxman.net/2011/01/22/setting-up-a-phone-patch/

Part 2 is here: http://voxman.net/2011/02/05/setting-up-a-phone-patch-part-deux/

You will see that he uses a mixer in the tutorial to route everything, but I didn't need one because my Duet handled that part.

This can, admittedly, seem a bit confusing at first, but once you dive in, it starts to clarify itself. If you find you're still completely lost after too long though, you may just be better off paying someone to set it up for you.

I've got one of these and they work great. Simple and easy.

Thanks SO much, Ben and Eddie! This is great information! I will be 'patching' soon, I think! Thanks again!

A little late to the party but if you have any questions about setting up the patch let me know- I'm the one who wrote the linked blog entries above (and thank you for the links!).

They're a bit out of date now, I really should update them...
