is anyone using this type of booth (manufactured in spain)? i've been in touch with paul strickwerda and mike bratton (who lives in nyc and sent me sound samples and nothing but good to say about his) so i have their feedback, which is most welcomed. still, you watercress lovers might have an opinion, too.
thanks in advance. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

The "studio bricks" concept is sound (no pun intended) and works as advertised. A little pricy for what yiou get though; as well, Studio Bricks make a small area sound a bit boxy - which happens when considering a small enclosed area as a voiceover booth. They are best used to isolate "talkers" for podcasts, translators, drums, or piano.
Diane, what is your need or desire?
For an application to work for VO (and in your studio area), it will need to open up your room yet reveal a clean wide sound you might be missing. If a booth is desired - there are alternatives which would sound cleaner and fuller.

dan, mike has been terrific! yesterday, he answered my email inquiry with a lengthy story about his booth, his old booth, etc.
frank, the usual problems persist. the bench basement has cupboards built out to flush with the walls, creating the empty and hollow sound, even when they are filled with crap. they are a 6' deep nightmare. i have reflections like crazy, editing that takes 4 times as long, and with every move of the gobo and cubicle partitions i gain nothing, basically. plus, we may sell or rent this place in the spring, so anticipating moving and, prior to that readying the place, precludes working here when anyone is around. and there IS work to do on this house. also, because of the farkin low ceilings, i can't put a booth in here anyway, am super cramped in the space, and feel like i've taken 10 steps back since i moved my studio gear here. what a blow to my so-called career, honestly.
grrr. it is very unmotivating to be in this space. it is luck that i have a lot of telephony work, where quality doesn't matter much. still, i'm editing those 8k mono acm waves too. good times. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Diane:
What DAW are you working with?
I've got methods to cleanup a file very rapidly, semi automatically, with TwistedWave, that will make your workflow on stuff like telephony just fly..
.
There's nothing I can say that Mike Bratton hasn't told you already, because he's told me all about it, with full photo and audio samples for EWABS...
The StudioBricks is absolutely first-rate product, if you can wait for one. I think it's about a 1-2 month wait right now, last I communicated with Guillermo. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

george, thanks for your vote of support, too. i emailed with guillermo yesterday and yes, probably a couple of months. oh, i can wait; i've managed this workaround for a while now so have mastered it (heh heh). the rough cost of the unit and shipping is comparable to stateside voice booths, such as the gretchken (gk acoustics) booth. that, btw, is so much less to ship. it must be because they're in lakeview, oregon, which is about 560 miles. gullermo had some super things to say, including that many vo are wanting the one studiobricks (the version mike bratton has) but he hasn't priced out specifically or arranged a regular connection between spain and estados unidos.
my daw is aa 1.5
frank, thanks for your calls and concern. i'd like to hear your opinion on studiobricks and why you opine it may **not** be a good choice for vo. also, yes, any other suggestions teetering on solutions are welcomed! i'll ring you later. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. D. My answer is simple... Studio Bricks work and do well ---- (wait for it)
---- for certain things, such as: a drum iso booth, loud vocal artists (good for animation sounds), strong-sharp-fast hits, brass iso booth, some vocalists (who own a diverse set of pipes and are very dynamic).
The SB "cabin" has an interesting fluke - it is wroks well for a translation booth or a simple podcast, but may be boomy or bassy when used with softer instruments or the subtleties of VO recordings. The "fluke" can make VO tedious for the listener in long form recordings.
For most VO artists, the Studio Bricks setup (to me) - tends to suck the life out of softer more subdued sounds and are acoustically sterile for the VO range and dynamics.
I do like their simplicity, ease of use, teardown capabilities, and when used on a wood floor can offer some attenuation in the mids and highs, but still are boomy/bassy for VO.
Disclaimer: This is my opinion and no animals were hurt during the writing of this post. Any similarities to any other persons opinion is strictly coincidental. Use the offering at your displeasure. So there. And, no you may not quote me.
I recenlty used an SB setup in a local studio for VO and the above description was my own and the studio engineers (who had borrowed SB's to test them as a drum booth and thought we would try them on VO). The engineer has years of experience and many, many hit recordings is his stead... I trust his ears more than mine for this kind of thing.

what about a booth that's properly treated with rockwool or OC 703/705
acoustic panels (not just foam) |

frank, thanks for your input. would you mind naming the local vo/studio that has/had the sb for testing? i'd like in on that. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!
