my guess is you'd be fine just getting the basic GAP Pre 73 without any of the mods or add-ons. |

Only worth it if you want the hardware hipass, pad, phase switch, and insert capability. It could have its place, but I personally wouldn't need it...all I'd use is the hipass, and I'd just do it in software before I spent an extra $150 on the option. That's just me though. |

The consensus over at Gearslutz is the fancy on is quieter. I've had my eye on one or the other for a while. Let me know how it sounds with the 416 as I have the same.

Call Bryce at Warm Audio, he answers the phone and loves to talk audio. The Warm Audio WA-12 is just as nice as the GA Pre, and has a real quiet WARM sound for just a bit less ($ 449.00). The Cinemag input and output transformers MADE IN THE USA are Da Bomb! He can get you set up with one or pointed in the direction to get one on a trial bases, then you can decide to keep it or not! I do not get a dime from him, and doubt that he knows who I am, but I will just offer this advice for what it's worth.
Have a great 2013!! _________________ -----

I notice that in Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, the WARM WA12 is sold by Golden Age Music -- makers of the GAP PRE-73 (DLX).
I'm not sure what to make of that.
Though... as satisfied user of a GAP PRE-73 MKII, I'm intrigued... |

Two positive reviews at Zzounds.com -- one from a "voiceover" person, and one from a "voice actor." It's rare to see reviews of preamps or even mics from spoken word people, so this is quite a surprise. |

fwiw, I bought a stock GAP Pre-73 to try with my 416 last year. I tried it out and the GAP is currently sleeping in a box in my closet and I'm still running the 416 thru my trusty dbx 286a. I was expecting the GAP to bring a significantly different texture to the party and for me it did not. Sounds pretty good with my tube-modded Rode NTK though.
For my v-o that I produce I've found much more significant/useful results just by using plug-ins... mainly the Waves Renaissance REQ-6 eq for clarity and their V-Comp and CLA Compressors for punch/thickness. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker
