|
|
Hi all,
Another newb question for you:
I've been using the MicPort Pro with the 416, so monitoring in the booth has never been a problem. Now that I'll be switching to a dedicated preamp & interface, how am I able to monitor with headphones in the booth?
Do I need a piece of gear? How do I control volume? At first I considered running the USB/Firewire directly in to the booth with the interface, but my speaker monitor control would end up in there as well; I'm not using a mixer. Hmm.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks. |

I think any interface worth using will have a headphone output. What interface are you moving to? If it ally doesn't, you can always just map your DAW output to your computer headphone jack and use the computer's volume control. If your interface only has one output (and you are using it for monitors outside the booth) you can just use a splitter or headphone amp to split the output signal, and just turn the monitors off when you're in the booth. A headphone amp in the booth would give you volume control of the split signal if you had no other way to control it. |

I monitor with my ears. I don't use cans at all. |

I'm with CC. The only time I use headphones now is if I'm working in another studio with a producer/engineer, or at home in an ISDN session when I need the talk-back. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Same here unless I'm in a patch session of some sort, or if I am narrating an audiobook. I use in-ear monitors in one ear for punch and roll recording. But if you want to use cans, there are plenty of ways to control volume. |

Add one more to the "No Cans" club..... Over the years, I've found that it's much too easy to get caught up in listening to what you sound like, rather than what you're saying. Performance killer, without a doubt. _________________ Don Brookshire

going headphone-less definitely seems to help me keep the radio voice at bay |

I use a pair of open-ear sennheisers when needed, but otherwise, I can do without "shutting myself in".

Coming from the radio biz (so many years ago) I just can't work without headphones. I try to go "naked" every so often and the results just don't sound right to me. I do run them as low as possible however. My hearing is so much better at my age than many of my fellow broadcasters. To each their own, I guess.

Always better sans cans here, but sadly not always practical. _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

One ear with cans, one ear without.
If it's long form narration, I might go Sans Cans.
My Focusrite ISA One has a really nice Headphone Pre built in, so I can monitor either the direct feed out from the mic or the return from the DAW. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I'm in the "one ear" club with Bruce, at least when I'm recording myself. I've tried to get away from that but invariably I'll get what I think is a great take and move on, only to find out later that I thwacked the mic stand or something else stupid but didn't notice at the time.
For outside sessions, I go can-less. _________________ Bob Ransom
