|
|
Hi Everyone!
I have searched and searched the interwebs, but can't find out how to punch and roll in AA CS6! I had 5.5 and upgraded specifically for this feature (I think they call it Quick Punch in this one). The site says:
"Quick punch
Quickly punch in corrections on the fly as you rerecord: Toggle the record button to punch in and out as many times as you want."
When I do that it just takes me back to the beginning of the recording and records from there...uh...not what I want! I think I am missing something with the markers maybe. I tried throwing a marker in and then toggling the record button, but it still goes back to the beginning...UGGHHH!!
Anyone working with this that can tell me what the trick is?
Thanks in advance!

As of now, punch and roll is not possible in AA. They removed the preroll function, which is imperative for punch and roll to work.
Quick punch (I believe) is primarily for musicians who want to record a section over and over until they get the perfect take.
A free solution I went with (because I use AA) is to punch and roll record in Presonus Studio One Free. Then export as WAV to edit in AA. I record everything else in AA.
I talked to Adobe, and they said it would be implemented in a future version. |

As someone who worked in software development for 15 years, I can tell you that removing functionality in a new version is monumentally, brain-dead stupid. _________________ Jeff

Makes no sense to me at all. Especially a feature like that. They took themselves out of the running with some people in our industry. Hopefully they will really put it in the next version. |

Ugh...I was afraid someone was going to say it's not supported . I thought I had read they were putting that back in with the release of CS6 which is the whole reason I upgraded from 5.5. Oh well! I think I might give Presonus Studio One Free a try...thanks Jason! Otherwise I will just keep plugging along with the click marker and edit out later method (I'm gonna need a Snickers if I do that cause I won't be goin' anywhere for awhile...lol!). _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

Punch and Roll works great in Reaper, with the ability to do so without wearing headphones and using a speaker in the booth. Can you pull that off with Studio One, Jason, or is it impossible not to monitor the microphone while recording? _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Yep. You can record without monitoring. I haven't tried yet. My reference monitors have an ever so slight (but audible to me) hiss. I could use the iMac speakers, but that would require me to change settings everytime...but I am doing a lot of audiobook narration over the next few months (and longer hopefully).
I've become rather fond if Studio One for narrating. For me, nothing beats AA for editing, though.
Fret not Fran! CS6 added some features (like FLAC export) that are improvements from 5.5. I'd say it is worth the investment. |

Recorded about an hour tonight, and used the speaker in the computer. That is a great way to do it! I had been using the Shure in-ear monitor in one ear, and my ear always got a bit sore. One great thing about Studio One is that it stops playback a tiny bit before the actual recording starts, ensuring that there is no bleed over noise from the playback. |

I upgraded to Cubase 7 tonight and then spent a couple of hours sorting out the key mappings and practicing so I can do punch and roll. I have to wear cans, but it's worth the price to be able to record so much more quickly. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Awesome, Jason! I so wish I could get Studio One Free to work, I bought Reaper instead for $60 (since I don't use it for production, just training).
I wouldn't want to wear cans while recording an audiobook for hours at a time, that's for sure.
Corey, I've been using the "mix room tone into edited track" trick with TwistedWave and it's awesome. Massive time saver!
My latest audiobook edit process with TW (when working with punch n roll narrators):
1- Split into 10 min segments (easier to manage, less to loose in a problem) using Set Markers function
2- EQ high pass and gate (jusssst right)
3- Detect Silence (again, jusssst the right settings, takes practice)
4- Scroll and visually adjust selections where Detect Silence might have selected an "S" at end or start of a word. (love the Apple Magic Mouse for this). I listen to music while I do this tedious part.
5- Silence selections (press S)
6- Special Mix Paste room tone (which I also high-pass filter if needed)
Note: I use Keyboard Maestro to loop a section of room tone 10x so I have more than enough length for step 6.
7- Recombine sections into complete chapter (again, great for 2+ hr chapters) _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
