Hi Again;
Going to be needing some more audio treatment in my space (it's 11x13) so I'll be building a couple of wall panels, and treating a couple of GOBO panels as well, my question: is one brand (OC or Roxul) any at sound absorption than the other? |

At the same thickness and density, you'll get about the same absorbtion. The 703 and Roxul are easier to work with than Rockwool brand. It really comes down to what you can get locally. Shipping is pretty much cost prohibitive...it'll cost as much to ship as it does to buy the stuff. |

I managed to find OC703 locally and it worked out just fine. I made detachable panels for the walls (2" 703 sitting in a 4" frame to give an airspace behind), "superchunks" for the corners and inserts for the ceiling. I never experienced any bad smells and just followed standard glass fiber precautions when working with it. The frames were made out of 4" x 1" and everything covered in brown burlap.

or Roxul
I only used OC703 because I could pick it up... I think the numbers can be distracting.... they are much of a muchness and it all depends on what you can easily lay your hands on.
D... are you and I going to be arm-wrestling over this? _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Either should be fine. The key is to get enough to settle the room reflections and create a quiet space.
As for arm wresting? My money's on Pinto. _________________ Don Brookshire

I'll set up everyone's phone at strategic places to capture the event from multiple angle, then make a video for all to see. |

I purchased my OC on eBay at an unbelievable price, each panel cost a total of 22.50 ea to build. As you can see in the photo I ran out of the Burlap, built 12 panels total. Purchased a dozen OC 1" panels for $68.00 (Shipping included).
The frames are 2in. I used 1” OC with a backing of 1” Styrofoam. Thinking about doing stand-offs to offset the panels from the wall, it works so good now, I have not made that a priority.

I opted for Roxul Safe'n'Sound semi-rigid batts, for a few reasons. One BIG reason was my unwillingness to pay shipping, coupled with the fact that I can get the stuff at the local Lowe's or Home Depot (both places keep it in stock; no special ordering). A package of 12 three-inch-thick batts, 15.25" by 47", cost about $40. The bundles are big, and my trunk is small, so I can only buy one at a time; it goes in the back seat. But that's enough to keep me building for quite a while. |

or "Safe & Sound"?..fyi I'll be putting them in frames.. |

That cotton stuff is absolutely what I'd use if I was building now. Great absorption and none of the side-effects. |

Definitely agree. If you can do it, the acoustical cotton batts are the way to go. Especially in a smaller space. No contest. |

Me three on the cotton bats. I found some John's Manville stuff locally for a friend studio which has a lower formaldehyde content but it still has it. Next time will be natural all the way. _________________ Pam Tierney
