Are the "cons" toward the end of this video still an issue at voice123.com? Would you recommend voice123.com or voices.com for a beginner (like me)?

This is a topic much like politics and religion. Tread carefully.

Personally, I found it a good service. Even if, for nothing else, you got daily of actually auditioning. V123 removed the restriction on the amount of auditions, so that is no longer an issue.

This is a... how to put it charitably... "sensitive" topic here on the VO-BB. Few topics are as likely to result in what passes for a flamewar 'round these parts.

Search the archives for:

"V123"
"Voice123"
"P2P"
"voices.com"
"voicebunny"

And enjoy yourself.

I agree with Corey... and I'm probably one of the worst offenders when getting embroiled in P2P discussions (see signature line). The simple fact is that they work for some VOs, and don't work for others (regardless of position in the industry). There are many legitimate questions about their value, both financial and ethical. There are a plethora of facts, opinions and rhetoric if you search the archives.

I would only suggest that you don't search for "voicebunny", as you will only find universal condemnation. Don't sully your keyboard with that particular combination of characters.

Irrespective of anyone's opinion of the relative value of Voice123, Voices.com or any other casting service, the short answer to your question is "no." There are two types of "beginners." The first is someone with no training or experience, someone like yourself who is just embarking on this journey.

Perhaps frustratingly, once you do get some appropriate training and are beginning to be "ready for prime time," you are still a beginner -- this time, the second type, someone with skills but no significant experience.

This second level of beginner can probably benefit from subscribing to an online casting service and, dare I say, even going after some of the lower paying jobs the more experienced voiceoverists ought to be avoiding. But keep in mind, Voice123, Voices.com and their ilk do not existfor newbies to practice auditioning; they are there to connect working professionals with actual paying jobs. How well they serve that purpose is a discussion for another time.

Lee, I agree that they don't exist for the purpose of audition practice for newbies, however, when I was starting out (and didn't know where to find leads and was learning how to be effective) it was a great training ground. OJT, if you will, for a newbie who didn't have the skills to approach good paying professional clients with confidence. Maybe I jumped the gun on going after work, but it has worked out for me.

Neil, please check the archives. If you have specific questions beyond what is talked about there, go ahead and ask.
