Hi All!
Bob Stevens here emanating from sunny (not so much today) Newport Beach, CA.
I just recently joined the forum from being a guest lurker for the last several months. Very impressed am I with the depth, knowledge and professionalism of all the members. Thank you all for sharing and imparting your wisdom to us neophytes.
A little bit about me; I am no stranger to a microphone having majored in music in college and performing to pay for it. Writing and arranging big band music was my passion at the time. Anyone remember Stan Kenton? He was the man. Yes I am an old fart. Anyway... in my circle of friends I am often called upon to be "La Voz" at public events, charity auctions, MC'ing, etc. I have done everything from Rodeos to VO's and reading to the neighborhood kids. Mostly for charities or friends, in my spare time and at no cost. When they are getting it for free they can't bitch too much about the quality. (just kidding)
Recently I was approached by a friend to do some descriptive narration for some sales videos on a sweat equity basis. What fun! I haven't recorded much at home since the early days of Cool Edit. My old "tube and tape" gear is long gone =( and my ole standby take with me to every live venue SM58 and mixer isn't up to the quality I wish to publish.
So currently I m on a journey of exploration.... Audacity, Reaper, mics, preamps and interfaces. Guitar Center and I have become well acquainted. I hope they don't get tired of me returning things that don't cut the muster. Unfortunately I have a good ear, know what I like and what works well with my voice. Just have to find the budget to pay for it all! In the meantime I grabbed some practice gear so I can lay down some tracks and get familiar with the mixing, plug in's etc..
This forum has been a big help on my journey of aural enlightenment.
When I am not working you will find me offshore racing in BIG sailboats!
Thank you all for letting me join in your fun!

Hi Scott!
We are close by. Until my move to Newport 2 years ago I lived Anaheim Hills for 15 years. One of my best friends lives in Placentia.

I had the pleasure of seeing him and his band perform live on several occasions, including a double-double bill with Maynard Ferguson's band and Count Basie with Joe Williams at Carnegie Hall in 1976.

From one old fart to another, I welcome you to our little enclave.
I too remember and loved Stan's music. Oh you'll also find some talented musicians in this lot. _________________ Roger Tremaine

Hi and welcome, Bob.
Do I remember Stan Kenton?? Are you kidding?!
For 5+ years I hosted a Saturday night show on a now-defunct station in New Orleans, WWIW-AM ; "The Way It Was Radio". Our format was big band and swing. I got introduced to, and came to love, artists like Kenton, Ellington, the Dorseys and so many more.
And, as an aside, my mom - a professional dancer in the 1930's - used to dance with Danny Kaye when he was just getting started. Remember HIM? _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Of course I remember Danny Kaye!
One of my favorite Kenton cuts -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEt13RIL0ko you haven't lived until you have sat in the first few rows in front of a band like this. The first big fat sound pressure wave that hits you from all those horns is incredible! He used to play here several times a year at Disneyland in the French Quarter gazebo.
In the early 70's I spent 3 years in summer Kenton Jazz Clinics at Sac State. The band members and writers taught all the classes. What an experience! I was into the odd meters at the time. A la Don Ellis and Hank Levy.

OK, the Six Degrees of... I used to WORK for Danny Kaye (Kaye / Smith Broadcasting). My mom was Debbie Reynolds double in a number of movies...
Debbie
My Mom (Betty)
and was a professional dancer for MGM (relating to Scott here). She was a jitterbug dancer with Elvis in a couple of his movies and a regular dancer on Ozzie and Harriet as one of Ricky's gang. She also got eaten in the movie 'The Blob'.
And I'M from So Cal (Palos Verdes) and spent half my life at Newport Beach surfing the Wedge
Is THAT enough connections for ya?

And as we continue to twist Bob's original thread into something that utterly doesn't resemble the original...
Back to Rick:
- Interesting you'd mention Debbie Reynolds as, of course, we just watched "It's a Wonderful Life" this Christmas and I was remarking about how breathtaking she was. And yes, so was your mom, Rick... and mine! God, when I see pics of her from the 30's, it takes my breath away!
As far as the dancing thing, my mom toured on a show - long defunct now - called the Marcus Show, and Danny Kaye got his start there, touring with them. My mom, being a chorus dancer, did a few numbers with him. This past weekend I was at my mom's apartment (she'll be 95 this March) hanging up her old show pics on the wall for her and sure enough, she has a couple autographed by Danny. _________________ Scott R.
