Hey all, I had a question for you audiobook narrators:
When you record a book that has yelling dialog, do you change your gain and compression settings for the dialog parts, or set your gain low enough to keep from peaking on the yelling parts?
I would think if there is a 20db difference (or more) between dialog and narration, you would need to change settings back and forth, but I thought I'd ask what ya'll do. |

I usually fake yell. Add stress to my voice and go through the motions of yelling. The volume will still spike louder, regardless. However, this spike will be tamed in mastering. So as long as you're not distorting, don't sweat it. _________________ Jeff

I fake yell as well... that and a rock (or half-step) back from the mic. Go too far and it sounds disjointed as the quality of sound changes too much... but backing off a bit (trial and error will show how much) and faking it works for me. As Jeff says, as long as you're not distorting, all is good. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Good to know. I've got practice doing that. When one of three kids finally fell asleep, and the other two are making noise about to wake him up...I yelled very quietly |

For a good yell, try leaning forward past the mic capsule. Works for me ... _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover
