But Lee speaks the truth... find somewhere with a good return policy, or go and bug the crap out of the guys at Guitar Center and try a few out. My own opinions about low-end AT mics is not shared by a lot of people... if I just look at one, it pops. Chinese mics are a lottery... the QC is not usually as good as it could be... you could end up with a bad mic, not necessarily a bad model. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I don't think there's anyone here who doesn't fit ONE of those descriptors....

The advice does come FREE. It's worth exactly what you pay for it.
I did buy a mic Phillip recommended, The Sennheiser MKH 40. Very nice.
Sadly it's over the OPs budget. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

What Lee Gordon said.. yes
At best, these mic discussions are something to do between cranking out auditions and actual gigs... At worst, you get mired in an expensive sick addiction that spirals you into the G.A.S dark hole of misery and financial ruin
It's so subjective and dependent on so many factors... a "good sound" is a big jigsaw puzzle where the mic is merely one piece..
It always astounds me as to how it comes to pass that I acquire and try some of the industry standard mics and absolutely loathe them on my voice.. the EV-RE 20 for example.. why in Gods name anyone would use that mic for VO is beyond me, but everyone has their specific needs and purpose.. my Nady $10 dynamic handheld sounds better on my voice than the RE-20
for me..As a general rule of thumb:
-The AT mics sound "fizzy" to me, however the 2035 was the "least" fizzy
- After a lot of experimentation, I don't trust a USB mic.. with the Blue Yeti being the only possible exception
- the V88 is the best kept secret out there
- Most MXL or any Chinese mics are hit or miss
- the Apogee MIC is unbelievably over rated
- when I have had a chance to record with a U87 or a 416 into a good chain, I was blown away
- the 416 is in a different world than any other shotgun mic out there, including the NTG-3

I have a Blue snowball that I use for screaming. That doesn't happen very often. So, it is a nice desk decoration. I have a Samson USB mic which is okay, but for me, it's too hissy at the top end and I don't like that. I'm looking for a new mic myself, but not at the price range the OP has suggested. It's a search we all experience, and eventually we find the mic that works best for our particular voices. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Is $150 your entire studio budget, or are there additional funds earmarked for a preamp, audio interface, acoustic treatment, etc?
Are you just starting out & don't want to invest until you're sure VO is for you? Or are you hoping to compete on the same level as the professionals here (one of which I must admit I am not...yet.)
(Short answer: http://astore.amazon.com/eldorecoserv-20/detail/B003DSI62U Invest the remaining $60 in acoustic treatment.) _________________ John LaPiana

Lol. It's nice to get everyone opinion on things and to then take those opinions and do additional research. It's been fun.
Thanks again, everyone. _________________ www.nathanielgrauwelman.com |

Wow.
And here I've been making a healthy living doing v/o on my RE20 for nearly a dozen years. I've had AT mikes and a Rode NT1A come and go, but still use the RE20. And made about 6 figures last year using it.
Caveat: Today I ordered a CAD E100s. Why? Because I wanted one. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

I believe, in reference to the Re-20, I said I didn't care for it on MY voice, Scott...I've heard some of your stuff and you on the Re-20 and it's great |
