Just got in the new CAD E100S. Immediately did a quick back-to-back with my RE20.
Take your guesses and let me know what you think:

There were things about both recordings that I wasn't super fond of, but I would pick mic 2 as the winner (and I would guess is the CAD).
The first was too boomy (maybe it was a close in read) for me. It did a good job of room rejection though.
The second was much clearer and more detailed, but it really picked up the room noise, and almost made it sound worse than the first. I think with better treatment, the second would be better on your voice. That, or backing off the first. Both sounded good on your voice though...just depends on the read and style I think. |

Jason, my current room is way less than ideal, but it's temporary until I can boot my eldest child out the door (she has a deadline of June 1 to be on her own) and then I'm going to move my studio into the basement and really work on the acoustic treatment there. I DO have way too much room tone and noise where I am now. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Mic 1 is dull and muddy and I'd guess it's the dynamic mic. I'd get really depressed if I had to use it all the time.
Mic 2 much cleaner and I'd guess it's the new one.
Now I've only had a half a cup of coffee so far so....

Scott.... For a short-term solution to your room tone issues....
Moving blankets like the big boys use are cheap and effective, since they're usually filled with recycled denim batting. Grab a half dozen for less that $35 at your local Northern Tool. Hang 'em with Velcro or push pins for minimal damage. Exterior noises may require a little more engineering, like window plugs or door sealing. _________________ Don Brookshire

Actually, Don, what I am going to go get TODAY are comforters, like you throw on a bed. I'm first going to check my local thrift store and then go to Big Lots, where new ones are around $10 each. They're very similar in thickness, padding and texture to this:

Scott.... One caveat to your plan.... Cheap comforters often use polyester batting for fill.... NOT as effective at damping reflection or pass-through. Thickness really has nothing to do with effectiveness. It's the material that counts, much like studio foam vs upholstery foam, or stapling egg cartons to the wall.
Those moving blankets use recycled denim/cotton for fill.... which has been discussed as being effective here before.... and they're only about $5 each. _________________ Don Brookshire

I like them both different type projects.
Mic 1 for political or very authoritative reads. Brings out a lot of nice timbre in your voice. Maybe back away from it a couple more inches.
Mic 2 for everything else.
Both could benefit from a pop screen. I heard a little p popping.
I think both mics have you covered. I didn't hear enough room noise to worry about. I listened on monitors, not headphones.

Oh yeah, right, I guess I ought to at least give the 'big reveal'.
Mic 1 is the Equitek CAD E100S and mic 2 is the trusty RE20.
Here's a link to a recording done just now, however, with the CAD E100S, hi-pass filter on, and with my new 'acoustical room treatment':

I'm with Campbell on the mic distance. Back off a few inches, and see if it doesn't sound better. Sounds a touch over driven to me. _________________ Don Brookshire
