Okay, just hung up some 'acoustical deadening material' (ahem) in my studio.

Here is a back-to-back from yesterday to today. My ears really suck since I have a substantial frequency drop-off above 1.5khz, but thru my Sony headphones I can hear a real difference. Your thoughts?

Improvement. Not void of reflection, but significantly better. What materials did you settle on?

Don, for now I'm using a couple of $30 comforters from Wal-Mart. It was easier to get those than the moving blankets and I figured anything would be an improvement.

I've got one wall I don't know what to do with. It has a rather large pine bookshelf that takes up much of the wall. No point in draping BEHIND it since the bookshelf takes up about 80% of the open space. But that is also the wall that is farthest off-axis and farthest away from my mic, so I may have to live with it for the time being.

What's in the bookshelf? Done right, the bookshelf can act as a diffuser, if it can't be filled with absorbent materials.

I've got a series of bookshelves along an exterior wall of my studio. Not only does it cut down on transmission of exterior noise, I was able to negotiate with my wife a solution to one of our domestic issues.... Where to store our collection of vintage and rare teddy bears. Laugh This wall of teddies does a marvelous job of both absorbing and knocking down reflections while leaving a little natural ambience to the space. Being that the studio MUST be smoke-free, it's also good for the bears. Wink

Yeah, I know.... Teddy bears? Who'da thunk?

It's not a permanently attached shelf, but right now I have nowhere else in the house to put it. It's filled with the usual crap; cds, books, office supplies, cables, junk, bullets.... Wink

Sounds like you could benefit from a little housecleaning. Wink

Try this.... Particularly on shelves in the approximate height range of your mic.... Remove highly reflective hard surfaces like cd cases, etc. Books are actually good, but try varying the depth of the surface, so you don't have one flat wall of books. The encyclopedias should not go here. Big book, little book, fat book, etc.... Til you get a varied surface depth. This can help break up and diffuse reflections. The same goes for software boxes, and other similar items. You'll be surprised how it can change the sound of the room.

Oh.... and try to avoid empty shelves. Highly reflective resonators.

Bullets, eh? Better watch out for those higher frequencies or you might be havin' some problems other than NOISE reflection... Gasp

Seriously though...night and day difference in sound from what I can tell - nicely done!

BTW - did you use your E100s in this clip?

Actually, Bruce, the bullets are in the bedrooom, next to the .9mm.

Yes, used the CAD E100S here and it's my choice between the two mics for now, although apparently both sound good to people's ears. I personally like the ever-so-subtle extra warmth of the CAD.

Glad to hear the comments. Even to my old tired ears I can hear a noticeable and badly-needed improvement.

Scott,
Sounding much better! Congrats!
I use shipping blankets and bass traps and panels from GIK acoustics. They're right at 285 and 85 on the northside by Spaghetti Junction. You can drive right up to their shop and take the panels away in your car! Nice people there too.

Listened to Irony on my Sennheiser cans and could hear some room noise...also did you punch in the phone sound on a real phone? Sounded like it was a few feet away and mic'd rather than mixed in.

Irony? Oh..... okay, I remember now.

That was way, way, way back before the new mic OR the room deadening. Yes, the room noise is pretty awful there. The phone ringing was real and it came through my mic AS I was recording. That was, uh, the point of the "irony". Wink

So, if you succeeded, does that make you "mostly dead"? Laugh
