Not quite luck---but there is the belief that the minute you book a vacation is when all the last-minute-oh-so-urgent work floods in.

Preparation, practice..... And more preparation.

Early in my career I witnessed many an actor and disc jockey employ elaborate preparation rituals before they went on stage or behind the mic, and the majority of them were not very happy performers and often not the best at their profession. I learned not to do that.

I spend several seconds tops before going on stage or before the camera or mic thinking about how I'll perform and then just do it. Let the creative juices flow I say.

i only do a few live events a year, and don't prepare for any of them. i just walk up and what spews forth ... well, spews. i've been doing those few events for up to 18 years now, so i guess it's working. low expectations on their part, i'd imagine.

i spew, too ... or speak extemporaneously for money ... and it comes pretty naturally, with some wit, too, without any superstitions or rituals save wearing michael jordan's nc shorts under my dress.
