Thanks Philip.

I do find it sad that this thread went in a negative direction.

Our staff is a team of talent, who do QA for the purposes of helping talent get work.

Break down what happened last week alone:

Jobs approved through QA totaled = $65,000
There were also 6 Union jobs posted
There were many jobs held via private message that I dont know about.
Just this morning, I am helping a guy I know find talent for a Global Ad Agency.

Commission earned by staff? $0

Talent helping talent. I dont see a problem with it, and we never encourage people to go low ball themselves.

Philip, I apologize, but you are way off base here, and I seem to remember criticisms by you that there wasnt enough QA, that "we let anyone join"? Well, we also lose money talking people out of joining until they feel confident.

I know our team and our business ethic (and heart) at Voice123 is in the right place.

I am sad this thread took a negative turn, but I cannot reply here now.

ps- Philip, your account...You are using your profile incorrectly. You have opted out of all budgets, except one, and you have some blank areas in your profile. It looks incomplete, and on top of it, you will only see fixed budgets, which normally pay lower than flexible or TBD jobs.

Hope that helps.

Update:

Not to beat a dead horse. but.. since I followed the guidelines here, (2 1/2 weeks ago), I have done 60 auditions..

One booking (well, two actually.. the second gig is on hold)

Four "Finalist"
Three "Maybe"
One "Considering"

Okay.. let me preface this by saying since last June, when I first signed on, I've gotten a handful of "not likely" and maybe one "you will not be considered"

Since Jan 22, 2013? Ten "Not Likely".. (one of them was from a client looking for a vo of someone commenting on the harsh Chicago winters, and I'm FROM and BASED in Chicago..)

Of those Ten "Not likely", the majority have come from the last 15 or so auditions... WTF.. my skills or gear haven't changed, but I guess all of a sudden I'm less qualified.., as a matter of fact, I have UPDATED my gear and have just gone through a bunch of the excellent Nancy Wolfson's online tutorials..

Also, this is all after I updated and fine-tuned my profile and demos.... Good Lord

P.S. In the last day or so, I have booked 2 gigs through my agent without so much as audition., paying total 4x what the 1 gig for V123 paid.. So I must not be THAT bad...

I'm kinda done trying to rationalize this..

Absolutely, Don! Why wouldn't it be a good use of his time? If he wasn't auditioning for work - that is, responding to active leads from potential clients who have stated they NEED a voice (because they posted a job lead) - then what would be a better use of his time? How do YOU spend your time when you're not actively working on a paying project?

I, for one, make no apologies to anyone about the fact that I audition on V123. And like Capt54, I land one out of every 30, 40 or 50 auditions. 9 years ago when I started on V123 I landed one out of every 20-30 auditions, but times have changed. There are a LOT more very good talents on the P2P sites now competing and the competition is MUCH tougher.

A waste of time? Hardly. In the 9 or 10 years I've been on that site my best guess is I've auditioned an average of 20 times a month. That would be about 240 times a year or let's say over 2000 auditions in the past decade. I have no idea how many jobs I've landed there, but let's say it's one every other month or so, so about 6-9 jobs a year. Of those roughly 70 total jobs from a P2P site over that decade, MOST are repeat customers. Today, 90% of my work is repeat and referral business. When things are slow, as they were last week, I go looking for new business. I contact former clients and I sent out about 100 e-mail marketing blasts to producers in the S.E. region. Of those 100 or so e-mails, I got about a dozen responses. Most said "Thanks, we'll keep you in mind", but a few were blown away, and followed up wanting to know rates, availability, etc. One guy added my demo to his website that same day. Was that a bad use of my time?

You audition for the leads your agents send you, right? Is that a waste of time? I mean, you certainly don't land all of them. I'm lucky to land 1 of every 20 or 30 leads my agents send me. Is that a waste of my time? Of course not.

Anything you can do to try to get business when you're not actively working on a paying job is not a waste of time. If you're not working OR trying to get work, then you're using your time elsewhere (obviously). For me, that 'elsewhere' time is spent mowing the lawn, cycling, walking the dog, washing clothes, making dinner, etc. That's certainly not a waste of time and it's time well-spent, but it's not generating any income or job leads. Auditioning does (or, at least, has the potential to).

Is auditioning for work a good use of time?? Hell yes.

Scott makes some great points, but the point of my post was really to kvetch about the goofy rating system again. I wish there was some way to shut that option off when u go back and review your auditions. Like, being ranked "not likely" when you are 2nd or 3rd out of 100, being ranked as "Finalist" when u are 1st out of 50 and then never hearing anything, or being ranked "maybe" when you are 16th out of 25

Being ranked 2nd means nothing in that regard, since the ranks are shared. If you have 1 finalist and 22 others ranked not likely, then 22 people will see that they are 2nd out of 23 auditions. It simply means the voice seeker chose their top voice and discarded the rest.

So being ranked 2nd out of 100 can carry as much weight as being ranked 99th out of 100. Absurd

With all due respect, you don't have it quite right. The problem is, nobody has it quite right. I submitted an audition that was given a 'Considering' 2nd out of 34.

The next day it was 'Considering', 1st of 34 auditions.

But later that same day... this audition had changed to 'YOU WON'T BE CONSIDERED'. Which means, they never want to hear from me again and I am actually blocked.

Two weeks later I got a call, and booked the spot. I almost burst out laughing.

After we nailed down the specifics, I asked this person about the ranking. He SAID, 'I just ranked them with one or two stars and then passed them on to my boss. The ones I didn't like, I didn't give ANY stars.'

He went ON to say, 'We're new to Voice 123... you mean you could SEE the RANKINGS?! I had no idea the talent could SEE what they were being ranked. THAT'S a bummer'.

This was a major production house in Houston, not some office cubicle. He told me, 'The client had It between you and another guy, but we thought you nailed what we were trying to do, so we pushed you'.

In the end, he had no idea he had blocked me, as he did 26 other people. It's still sitting there with a 'You won't be considered' and the invoice has been sent.

So if you're trying to ascribe logic to the ranking system, I think that pretty much eliminates it from the equation.

Yonie - respectfully, I don't think what you've described is accurate ... as I understand from what I've read here and elsewhere, the numeric ratings are independent of the "finalist, considering, etc" buckets into which voice seekers can sort auditions. Twenty two people cannot all be ranked number 2.

Therefore, it is technically possible to be ranked 1 of 50, but "bucketed" into "will not be considered". Perhaps someone from here could contact v123 for clarification? I'll volunteer, if this is okay with the mods ...

It's not worth contacting them because it's irrelevant. Despite Voice123's 5-star ranking system or Voice's.com's green checkmark vs. gold thumbs-up, there is really only one ranking that counts:

1. Did you get the job?

2. Or not.

Lee - I agree that the only measure that really matters is at the bank.

I'm not an apologist for the the P2P sites. I've had my share of frustrations with them, as well. However, I think it's only fair that if we're going to slag 'em, that we at least get the facts right. Smile

That's why I stepped into the fiasco last fall when voices.com changed their policy on the amount of contact between voices seekers and buyers. And while I dislike the v123 ratings as much as the next person, I dislike misinformation being spread even more ... especially here on vo-bb.

We all have the LinkedIn groups for that Smile
