He may have said, "wanna," but at least he didn't say "do me a solid" (although that is what he wants). _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Another red flag that gets me is that it's for a "radio station rep"...what, there isn't ONE person at said radio station that can do a spec spot?... |

Why are we still talking about this? If it don't pay, it don't run. Old rule.... Still applies. _________________ Don Brookshire

What Frank said!
I say pretty much the same thing he does when asked to work for free:
"I'm sorry but I only do pro bono work for 501c and student projects."
It's that simple! Most of the time they don't even respond which is fine by me. The last thing I need is more people living rent-free in my head... _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

Sounds like a done deal.
The only freebies we should sanction are those for charitable 501(c) organizations... and free food samples from Costco.

reminds me of those auditions that say "no pay but we'll give you a copy of the finished spot which will be great for your demo reel" |

I'd rather write something better for my edit reel. _________________ Don Brookshire

Oooo... I like that one...
And the "student work" line works well for me. I actually DO do student projects from time to time because they're so far out. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

On a related note, while there certainly are plenty of charitable organizations that run on a shoestring, and often have no money in their budgets for things like voiceover talent...
...take it from someone who's on the board of of the Center for Non-Profit Management at the University of Miami:
There are loads of 501(c)(3) nonprofits with solid (often huge) budgets to spend.
Universities, some hospitals, and many other large institutions with multi-million dollar annual budgets are nonprofit organizations.
Most nonprofits rely on salaried employees in addition to volunteers. And some nonprofit CEOs earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
Bottom line? It's great to do pro bono work for deserving charities, and for organizations whose work is close to your heart. But don't let "free" be your knee-jerk reaction the next time a nonprofit comes knockin'. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

a regional Children's Hospital has been a very good, and good paying
client for me in recent years. Not once did I ever get a "freebie" approach from them. But then again, they are a class act. Nuff said. |
