I was playing around with some ways to make a generic "explainer video" demo sound better... I opted for visuals. Comments/critique welcome.

Nice. My only suggestion would be to take another look at the edit points for the slide transitions. Tweaking these to better match audio in just a handful of places will improve flow. Otherwise, it's simple, straightforward, and effective. Well done. I like it.
And it's NOT another freakin' SKETCH video. _________________ Don Brookshire

Ah, that's fun, and very nice.
We need more bluesy piano in corporate/elearning/explainer videos!
I'm going to go pitch that to some of my German clients... _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I just like a simple piano otherwise things get too busy. It's a style I pretend to play sometimes
Don, the cut is a bit rough and could be a bit tighter on the sync in some places, but I was on a re-learning curve with Final Cut after working out how to do the mechanics of the text capture... it had been a long day, and I was knackered! I'll be re-doing it if it seems like it's a worthwhile endeavour.
It was fun to do though. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

No After Effects or Motion I'm afraid. About four or five years ago I purged my system of, erm, software I hadn't actually paid for. Out went Photoshop and Final Cut Pro (and Motion etc.). I have Final Cut Express and that's what I'm wrestling with at the moment... it's still a powerful tool (compared to iMovie etc.) ... I've just got to get to grips with it again.
I feel a V2 coming on... it's going to be a long weekend as we're all getting snowed-in up here! _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Possibly. The problem is that I started with a Quicktime movie screen capture of the live generated text. That dictated a good linear editor to slice it up, which to me, rightly or wrongly, meant Final Cut. This is only because I am unfamiliar with the nuts'n'bolts of iMovie. I have used it for home movies though. I should look again... or maybe just approach this completely differently and use generated graphics rather than a screen capture... which somewhat painted me into a corner to start with. _________________ Bish a.k.a. i'd say - make your graphics in photoshop then use some of the cool crap imovie does to make them come alive. i don't know if imovie does transparent overlays (psd files) or not - i think probably not - but if you're going black text on white background that should be (relatively) easy.
i know it's a total re-work - but, hey ... it's snowing. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Great initial concept, great voice work of course, and I like the piano very much... which gave it an olde timey feel (to me), which made me think if you had more time(y) to mess, it would be appealing to add appropriate old black and white photos or advertising/promotional graphics instead of words, here and there. More work, but it could get you more work, too.

I agree with Bruce on all points. For me, the addition of such pics won't be as startling to my brain as the flashing words.
I love the generic feel. Reminds me of a Tim Sample joke about generic books : It's a good book and it don't bog you down with a lot of details, either! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Thanks for the comments guys. I've started work on an "olde timey" video. I agree that the music absolutely screams out for it. I'm trawling through archive.org to find the stuff that I have in my head!
I actually re-did the "flashing words" version after I looked at my methodology. The whole idea was originally driven by the whole "kinetic text" concept and is a work-in-progress... but I'm now looking at the archive footage thing as a much better idea... and a better use of my time!
Damn you Final Cut... you're a bigger time-sink than Facebook! (although far more beneficial) _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish
