I have a presonus firebox that's giving me trouble. Whenever I playback audio, whether it be in Audition, iTunes, windows media, it pops and crackles. Doesn't seem to be on the recording though. From what I can tell it's something to do with the link between the firewire chipset on my motherboard and the CPU. I have a Gigabyte motherboard, which seems to be an issue with the firebox. Long story short, I'm looking to replace it with a different interface. I'm looking at the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which is in my price range.

I'm currently using a Art MP Tube preamp as the first stop in the chain - which I replaced the stock tube and highly recommend doing so, much warmer and richer sound.

Is the focusrite a good replacement?

My 2i2 works great, never an issue so far. Surprising quality for the price. Only thing is the headphone amp is lame, I simply run it through another inexpensive headphone amp.

I have the 2i2 myself and I like it a lot, but I don't really have much experience or anything to compare it to. So take my comment for what is worth, a happy customer with very little knowledge in that area. Smile

Just get something that's USB 2.0: lose the firewire with that computer!

I had a 2i2 until a couple of months ago. It's a great unit but if you plan on using Source Connect, it is one of only a couple of interfaces known to have issues with it.
