I got an audition this morning (perhaps some of you got the same one) for a job that is listed as paying $300/hour.

It's described as a "series consisting of six 1-hour episodes, of which about 15 minutes will require your voice." I'm going to cut through the first bit of ambiguity and say that it's 15 minutes of VO per episode, not for the entire series. But beyond that, are they paying $300 per hour of my time? If so, it might be worth doing.

Or are they paying $300 for the narration for one of those 1-hour episodes, or worse, for one hour of finished VO? Either of those choices seem hardly worth getting out of bed for, especially since it's for a series on a national cabel network.

If I were to bet, I'd guess they meant $300 per episode.

But it's worth pursuing to get the clarification -- $300 per studio hr isn't too bad. Smile

For ambiguous requests, I always answer as unambiguously as possible... usually starting... "I was slightly confused by the quoted budget and I have taken it to mean (blah blah blah) and that is reflected in my bid."

I think Kristin is right and it would translate into $300 per episode... for 15 mins of finished audio for a cable documentary it's floating-away light, but that would still be $300 a work-hour assuming a 4:1 production ration.

I don't do P2P and don't know protocol. But is it possible to audition and if they want to hire you, then get clarification on the fees??? And, if they really want you, counter if you don't like their clarified offer.

Depends on the P2P, Bob. But in general, no. You bid on the project as posted. I think it's considered bad form to modify once the electronic handshake is done.

This particular job is being recorded in New York, which would have required me to take the whole day to commute to & from the city and do the work. If all six episodes were being done in the same session for an $1800 afternoon, it might have been worth it but, again, this was just more information that was not spelled out clearly in the job posting.
