Have you noticed recently, while listening to interviews, the proliferation
of the use of the phrase "sort of" even when referencing something very specific?
The use of the contraction "there's" no matter whether it is a singular or plural verb intended.
The most recent one I've noticed is that a great number of folks begin each response with the word "so".

I believe "sort of" is something of a weasel word when used with definites. Just in case someone proves you wrong, "but I said 'sort of'".

Thank goodness interjecting "like" in every sentence seems to be like, you know, on the decline.

So...I can't tolerate the manner in which "like & so" are being used in conversation.
I'm a part-time pageant coach, and fine all my girls a dollar for every "like" during training sessions. In today's usage, the word "like" is nothing more than a useless discourse particle; just like "umm and uhhh." A few sentences peppered with multiple "likes" will make an otherwise brilliant individual sound hesitant and ditzy...and starting a new sentence with the word "so" is just trendy crap that will, I hope, die soon.

I sometimes "so" at the end of a sentence and it drives me crazy...I think it's due to not being able to get out a full sentence in the past 8+ years. I know I do it, I am working on fixing it. I shall overcome this flaw.

I don't want to jinx it but I've gleefully noticed that "dude" is disappearing. So...

Don't worry Mandy, saying a lingering "so..." at the end of your sentences is a lot better than saying "the end" when you're finished speaking.

The phrase that I've heard being used much more often lately that bugs me the most is "these ones". I guess there's also its cousin, "those ones". What's wrong with good old "these" and "those"??

The "so" thing is just people trying to be hip. Totally agree it's the successor to "well"! It doesn't annoy me nearly as much as the more pathetically obvious attempt at hip-ness via use of the term "Right?!?" to mean something like, "I know", or "I can't believe it either!"

Language is so interesting. Smile

Also there is the command from politicians and pundits at the beginning of their statements to either "look" or "listen" blah, blah, blah...

Here in NJ, the correct use of that term would be"Yeah, right?" inflect up on right, with the same meaning as your reference. Of course, also featured is the completely different meaning of that phrase, "Yeah, right.", said skeptically and meaning something is definitely not right. I'm fine with both. Regionally appropriate, I think.

But this one gets me , and I've never heard it from native US English speakers. The use of "by the way" to begin a sentence, relating to nothing. Customer servce or tech reps working for US companies from offshore will say . "By the way, Bill, just click on Start....." They must be taught to say that with the belief that it makes them seem casual and approachable. It's good for a laugh.
