1.) People with the resources who use the U87 and will never change.
2.) People who wish they could afford one and get the TLM-103 instead.
3.) People who've drunk the Kool-Aid and use the 416MKH
4.) People with no money who go through any amount of MXL models until they find a good one.
5.) Strange people with hearing problems that have the Apogee MiC.
6.) Other strange people who manage to sound good on an Audio Technica.
7.) People who want 3) but settle for the cheaper Rode.
8.) Cool dudes who swear that Blue mics sound as good as they look.
9.) Uber-rich VOs who don't care, as long as it's more expensive than a U87 and has bigger bragging-rights.
10.) ... and finally, those (like me) who are constantly searching for the Holy Grail of the sub-$1000 mic that just works! Current fave... the CAD e100s
I am so not getting out of this thread alive... _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Don't forget those who don't have the budget for a U87, and actually think that a modded NT1a can sound as good as a $3k mic so they go with the Oktavamod NT1a.
I really need to try out the CAD. Are you using the old version or the new version? |

I'm using a Chameleon TS-1 Mark II with the large diaphragm capsule. It was about $600 and I got it on the recommendation of a friend who is an engineer and works in a pro audio shop.
It has several capsules, although I've only used the LDC one for my work. I'd bet it would sound quite good with a range of voices using the other capsules (a SDC omni and cardioid)
It's basically three mics in one. And it sounds amazing. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

I have three mic's I use, depending on where I am.
At my studio: the U87ai
At campus: Mike Joly (OktavaMod) modded Rode Nt1a
On road: EV RE-20
I'm going to slowly take all my cheaper microphones, MXL990, StudioProjects B1, and hand them off to Mike Joly at some point and have them all upgraded. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

I would love to take my V69me and let Mike Joly go to work on it... new capsule, components and tube plus the full rat-rod cosmetics. Mind you... all that wouldn't be cheap.
Hang on... new capsule, new components and tube, plus a complete body-overhaul... what's left of the original mic? _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Neumann TLM-193 for narration stuff
Rode NT1A for commercials. Some don't like this mic, but for me it has a clean,
up close sound that pops out of the radio and TV.
The 193 and NT1A are polar opposites, both are very good.
Also, have an RE-20 but don't use it much on my voice. My wife likes it, Must be the shape of the thing. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Bish...by "Drunk the Kool-Aid" do you mean that people that think the 416 works well for them are deluded or need a de-programmer?
I admit I use it for commercial/promo and use the Mojave MA200 , a Neumann U67 clone for long form. I gave up the U87 for the Mojave on my voice but still think it's a great mic and would not claim those using it are delusional and need a Kool-Aid intervention. _________________ There are rules to the Universe.
