i'm in the market to upgrade our video boom mic from the cheapo kit-rode to ... something else, and am looking for suggestions in the sub-$600 range. reliable, tight pattern, decent bass roll off ...

NTG1/2?
AT8035?

something else?

and ... if i DO find a mkh 416 used in my price range (or maybe a bit more) will the 48v phantom on my tascam dr40 power it to a sufficient level?

The 48v on your Tascam should do just fine.

I love the AT897s. They're $250 new, $200 used. I used to record corporate messages of the CEO of Coca Cola, and that was the house mic they used in the white limbo studio.

goal #1 is to spend less than $600 - semi-unrealistic goal #2 is to find the super-deal on the senny --- another choice i saw was the AT897. again, not primarily for VO - but to attach to the end of a stick & hover above a subject.

*lance - i was writing when you posted that

I second Lance on the AT897. I use it for all my video production and have been very happy with it.

Yes, we'd rig the AT897 on a static boom pole up and away...and yes, the roll off from 80Hz on it is good.

Another fantastic talking head mic for tighter interview shots is the Sennheiser K6 with the not so easy to find ME64 (not the ME66) capsule. For about $400 that sounds wonderful and I shot a few documentaries with that.

The NTG-3 is available, on a "try it before you buy it" basis.

Todd, for what it's worth those Unique_Squared deals on ebay are legit. I've purchased from them (direct) before and they're OK. I almost pulled the pin on one of their previous 416 deals which had the H4n as part for the package.
