Anybody tried out those ATs with the rectangle diaphragm? I'm pretty curious what that does to the sound of the mic.

This mic has a pretty flat sound. I played with it at NAMM, but don't have any useful audio samples to share. I'd say it is very clean and accurate, but not very interesting sounding.

I talked with my guy at Sweetwater yesterday, and he said that it really depends on the source -- and then it's either really, really good, or really, really bad.

Some examples:

Flute -- Great.
Piccolo -- Horrible.

Female blues singer -- AMAZING.
Operatic soprano -- NO WAY.

He said he thinks it would work well with my voice, but I was in the process of getting something else. Something with a price tag well under $3,000.

Well of course the Sweetwater salesman would say it would work well on your voice...but I doubt it would sound as good as U87, lol.

Thanks ya'll.

The rectangle diaphragm has been around for nearly 15 years without a lot of hoopla. Personal opinion - a good large electret capsule or a cheap Barbie microphone you will sound just as good.

OK, that is stretching it a bit. These "squarish" condensers are not bad for some sounds, but are horrible on lower frequencies. The longer the frequency wave the harder it is for the edges and corners to reproduce the sounds properly. Shorter frequency waves (such as those of a woman's speaking voice) the sound is nice. Much shorter waves of fine nuances in the wave are cut off by the design of the capsule.

Point taken, but I had made it clear that there was no chance I was picking one up any time soon. I was curious about it and had asked him about it.

Cool-looking shockmount, too.

Thank you, Frank. I've been trying to figure out how to best explain it for a couple of hours now. Embarrassed
