Hi US gang!!
How are we all? I hope things are fine and dandy Stateside!
I just thought I'd mention that I'm going to be in Sarasota for the next couple of weeks! Caryn Clark and I have plans to meet up as it turns out she wont be too far away from me. Yeyy!
If there are any other VO buddies in the area and you fancy meeting up, I would love to see ya!
Also, if you have any tips of things I should do or see while in that neck of the woods, please feel free to advise!
Love as ever,
Elisa x

I've been to Sarasota a few times... three strong memories... umbrella drinks, glorious white sand and The Dali Museum. There's quite a strong arts community, so check out the local events listings when you're there. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

The Colony Beach Club on Longboat Key. Get a bungalow near the water. Try the Blackberry Brandy BBQ ribs @ Tommy Bahama's on St. Armands Circle, or the paella at The Columbia (but watch out for the Latin waiters)....
Sangria by the pitcher, Stone Crabs, and Cuban coffee....
And if you go down to Caryn's neck o' the woods, make her take you to The Bubble Room for cocktails, ... or the Mucky Duck for dinner.
Damn, it's been too long....
PM me if you want to know more. Sarasota used to be my town. _________________ Don Brookshire

A few weeks ago, when I was in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area, I had a notion to pop across Alligator Alley to the Gulf Coast, where I haven't visited for nearly a decade. I never found the time. I'm determined to do it next year ( Caryn should consider this her advance warning).
One of the things I most enjoyed when I used to vacation in Sarasota was the Siesta Key Drum Circle. Every Sunday night about an hour before sunset, the drummers start drumming at Siesta Key Public Beach (one of the best beaches on the planet). And there are a lot of nice restaurants and bars right in the vicinity, so it is well worth making a day (and evening) of it. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I used to live one block off the beach at Siesta Key. Sunset was a nightly ritual for us beach rats.
Margaritas at the Salty Dog in Siesta Village, dinner at Ophelia's or Turtles, and dessert at Yoder's Amish Kitchen.... Best pie on the planet. Those Amish grannies can cook.
You'll have a great time. One of my favorite haunts. _________________ Don Brookshire

It is a heavenly area. As one who has lived all over the US (yes the cursed Radio) It is the best place I've ever lived.
I live a little over an hour away from Sarasota in Fort Myers/Naples. Surrounded by some of the top VO people anywhere. Caryn Clark , Peter Thomas, the amazing Chris Corley, Randy Thomas, Brian Lee, and more are all around me here. It is a VO hotbed.
If you put together a meet up I'd love to be there. _________________ There are rules to the Universe. Learn them and prosper. www.HumbleVoiceover.com |

My first radio job was at WKXY, Sarasota. I moved there from So Cal. One West Coast to another West Coast. The thing that I thought was cool, aside from the pig roasts on the beach at night and the bathwater temps in the gulf, were all the circus people that lived just outside of town. It was the winter home of Ringling Bros. Once in a while you'd see the bearded lady doing her shopping, or a few of the midgets hanging out at the bars. And on your way to wherever you were going, you'd notice a tightrope or trapeze in someone's back yard. And I don't remember the guy's name that got shot out of a cannon, but the cannon was in his front yard. Unfortunately he's no longer there. I heard that one day he went berserk and started firing relatives randomly into crowd of people (little Sarasota joke).
The Ringling Bros. Clown College was in Sarasota, until it closed in 1997. I'm sure there's a joke there but I've already used my quota.
All those suggestions above this post are good. You may want to drop down to Naples while you're there. Great outside restaurants and plenty of shopping. Kind of the Beverly Hills of the Gulf Coast. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Oh wow!! Thank you so much for all of that info!! I just cant wait!
Leslie, I think I may have to get my organising cap on! I'll speak to Caryn and see if she would help me, seeing as I won't know one end of the area from the other!
Melissa....you've said it now. Please come visit!! I would LOVE to see you! Lee, it sounds like a trip to Sarasota may be just the ticket for old times sake!
I think I may have a cousin or two in Naples so maybe I could venture in that direction to make things easier if anyone in the 'VO Hotbed' region fancied a little get-together? Rick, we might need you to be our 'alternative' tour guide! ("And on our left, you'll see bearded ladies who have occupied this particular region since 1964...!") _________________ E: elisa@elisacanas.com

EX!!! Come to Florida for this visit!!!! It'll be fun. We've not pinned down a time we're getting together... but I'm open. Especially on weekends.
We can surely do a little "vo get together" if you want. Randy might be into it, and maybe Chris... Brian stays to himself, but I'd invite him. And there are other vos in the area too!
Yes, if you come down this way, I'd definitely take you to Sanibel and Captiva (sunset on Captiva is awesome!!). _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!
