'Noticed with interest in the other thread the suggestion of helpful books.
'Just got e-mail today about Alburger's upcoming 3rd edition of THE ART OF VOICE ACTING.
He's really pumping this one....offering (he says) $900 worth of incentives to make an advanced purchase.

Heh. He even has Julie Williams' book there. I used to work with her in San Antonio way back in the 80's (before these new-fangled internet things). _________________ Greg Littlefield

I was going to get this book a few months ago until I heard a new edition was about to come out. I've heard some good things, so I guess I'll go ahead now. _________________ Joni Lambert

His book is a must-have for any up-and-coming VO's library.
I recommend it to all my students. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Yes, it's terrific. But I'm still holding out to see if he starts giving away cars.

Sorry, but he just went down a wee peg in my book. I absolutely hate that kind of advertising. Normally when I see all that red type and yellow highlighting and scrolling for hours until you get to the price, the first thing that comes to mind is - this is a scam. I think he got wrong advice from someone. With his stature in the field, he doesn't need to stoop to this kind of promotion. Just my opinion, of course. _________________ Elaine

I have to agree with Elaine, this is a bit cheesy "but wait...there's more!" Unless he meant to mimic the Ginsu knife style! His book was on my list to get so I'll let you know about the $900 of plug-ins offered. I too want to drive around with a cork stuck in my mouth. _________________ Pam Tierney

While we're at it, despite the fact that this board is an invaluable resource for nearly anything V.O., why is there a lack of tomes on V.O. marketing? In particular, V.O. WEB marketing?? I know there a couple and I've read them. But, I get far better information right here on the good ol' VO-BB and it doesn't cost me a dime! |

Somebody say 'AMEN'! I totally agree with you, Doc.
This board has been the best source of honest, productive information I've come across. _________________ Joni Lambert

Just counted 'em. I have 11 books on the subject of V.O. to include all the recommended volumes herein. I've read each and every one - all good in their own right - STILL, no match for VO-BB. BTW... those 11 books have cost me over $300... VO-BB? $0
Thanks, Deirdre and fellow boardies! You may have NO idea how much I appreciate each and every one of you. |

reminded me of the guerilla type marketing that Bill Myers did(does) along with some others(Barb Besteni and her cousin). Reminisicent of the snail mail marketing letters. A buddy of mine has an E-book published and is heavy into this stuff, and while we may not like it... it apparently works. Not on this well educated, and seasoned group, but on the mass market apparently it does. |

I think there's no book about internet marketing because we're all too busy working to write it. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Marketing for VO is not just 'marketing', it involves a unique strategy combining several mediums. Marketing is NOT Advertising.
In the case of VO Artists, there is another focus which is a much stronger issue, far above 'Marketing' - It's 'Branding'.
There are many great books regarding 'branding' which are designed for the 'brick and motar' world and specifically NOT designed for VO. However these books can give you an insite into what you can be doing to situate your 'brand' in the mind of your clients and potential clients.
The Brand Called You - Peter Montoya
Lovemarks - Kevin Roberts
These are two of the best books in this arena. The next trick is to apply this information to VO Artists and focus on the internet as 'a media of choice' to create the 'brand' of YOU.
Sorry about the thread 'hi-jack' here, but it applies to Jim's book too. Jim has a 'brand' and with this new marketing technique he is jepordizing that 'brand' or image in the minds of loyal readers and new readers alike (in my opinion).
Toodles
