If you first learn what makes you tick and then take the time to learn how other people work you become able to help yourself and others. Ignore psycho-babble, try discovering the real nature of people.
Now, the conspiracy.
I get on very well with John, a man about 15 years my senior, who attends the gym. Both of us take a moment or two to pass the time of day people as they try to strain a new muscle.
Lindsay works on a oil rig so she vanishes for 2-3 weeks and then is at the gym almost every day for the same length of time. I'd guess she's early to mid 30s. Lindsay has problems with the Gym Rats who seem to believe that she is there looking for a man and so they need to display like Peacocks. She finds it at best intimidating ..AT BEST. I noticed and John noticed.
Make a complaint? No.
I take John to one side and give him some instructions to pass on to Lindsay the next time she feels she's being ogled. I go and do my rowing stuff but notice Lindsay look at me and grin.
A few days ago Lindsay is busy trying to bend her body into the shape of a origami Swan and the Gym Rats madly strutting their stuff. Lindsay stops, goes to where the weights are to be found which means she has to walk past a rowing mad man, me. I stop rowing. Lindsay makes a point of walking behind me and brushing her hand over my shoulder, I smile, she smiles. That was it.
Today, Lindsay is there, Gym Rats are there, I'm there. The Gym Rats noticed me, said hello. I don't think they even noticed Lindsay, IN FACT they made a point of REPEATEDLY NOT NOTICING Lindsay.
Sometimes it's the smallest things that make the biggest difference.
Never play by your rules, play by theirs. |
