Well it's all a moot point now.

This morning my computer applied Windows updates (that I did not want) and after 30 minutes of updating, I then attempted to open Audition CS5.5. No go. It would open, but would neither play or record.

I then spent 2 hours trying every possible solution, only to keep getting error messages about missing files, etc. I tried to restore my computer to an earlier time (pre- windows updates) with no luck.

I tried to uninstall and reinstall Audition. It won't allow me to, says a file is missing. So now I can't even install CS5.5

Was on tech support with Adobe for nearly 2 hours with no luck.

The real irony is that my 10 year old copy of Cool Edit pro works great, thank God.

But other than reformatting my hard drive, I'm not sure what to do now. I'm S.O.L.

LAME! Honestly, I have had issues with CS6 too. Multiple times I have about said goodbye to AA, but I use the spectral view so much, and really love how effective it is at analyzing audio and cleaning up noise.

I tried to install ProTool 10 the other day, and it wouldn't open after the install. I think it had something to do with the Source Connect plugin, but I couldn't get it to work.

"Yes I love technology...."

Perhaps Reaper ftw?

I've never used it, but I keep seeing it pop up in alot of audio places with good reviews.

It's a real shame what Adobe has done to what used to be a perfectly good piece of software....

Just depends on your mind, your process, your circumstances, your background, your aptitude, and your preferences. Every DAW will record audio. Just depends on how you want everything to function and flow, and the features that are important to you. I will stop now before a flamewar ensues....we are treading on dangerous grounds.

I am at the point where I may have to reformat my hard drive. All because of an unwanted, and unasked-for Windows update.

At least I can use CEPro, and at this point, I'm not even sure I'll bother attempting to reinstall AA.

I'm even thinking about just going with Audacity at this point. Although I'm not going to put all the blame on Adobe for this one. I think it may have to do with that damn Windows update. Everything was hunky dorey last night when I went to bed.

i hate that you're having to go through all that scott ... sucks.

i guess i'm lucky - aside from a short flirtation with AA2, i have had zero problems with audition. cs6 on the mac is the bomb.

Ugh...sorry to hear this Scott. Which version of Windows do you use? Sorry if you posted that earlier and I missed that.

It's probably the Windows Update that is the culprit. Can you roll back to an earlier version?

Reaper is excellent, but I felt it was better for working with music/multitrack editing than VO. There's a bit of a learning curve to get comfy with it, just like with any system...but it's efficient and powerful.

Lance, I use Windows 7 and I CAN'T roll back to an earlier pre-update setting on my puter. That was one of the first things I tried.

Zach Meisner has been kind enough to offer to work with me via Skype this weekend to try to help isolate the problem.

WORST CASE scenario, I get my hard drive re-formatted, and that will only be a major inconvenience, not a life-or-death scenario.

I do not like Bill Gates, or Microsoft. I also don't like Apple or iTunes.
That kind of leaves me out in the cold, doesn't it?

Theres always Linux...but no AA for that system. Totally horrible situation. I despise technology time sucks. Computer issues are massively lame. I turned off all updates on my laptop. It works perfect as it is, so if I don't change anything, it won't break (at least for a software related issue). I hate when programs auto update. It's all part of their planned obsolescence anyway!

I would LOVE to go Linux. My brother is a programmer, and a total Linux geek. I earn my living through my Microsoft Word expertise; I imagine that my brother thinks that I live on The Dark Side.

That's debatable, but... I'm sorry... OpenOfficeOrg just doesn't cut it.

I got the same Windows 7 update this morning. I needed to get rolling first thing, and it was just in the way.

As I've said to my wife more than once... "I wish that Bill Gates would just STOP trying to make my life easier. He's done enough already, really."

You can set Windows to ask first before either downloading or installing updates.

Also, if you can ascertain the name of the file that munged your settings (i.e. KB2278344 or some such), you can go into Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, scroll down the list until you find the offending update and remove just that file. It's unlikely that you are the only person adversely affected by this update, so a little Googling may help you figure out which update file is the culprit. And to make it easier to spot, Add or Remove Programs displays the date the file was installed.

Scott, I know you checked your device order and properties in Adobe, but check your computer soundcard's mixer, update may have changed your settings. I've found on Win7 you have to check both when making changes.

Good luck.

Out of necessity, all morning I've been recording on my 10+ year old copy of Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and I have to say, it's like going home to an old friend. It runs utterly seamlessly (none of the digital 'hiccups' I'd get with disturbing regularity from AA 5.5).

I will do what troubleshooting I can, but as I told my wife, life is too short to fret over crap like this. If I can't get AA to reinstall and work correctly, then screw it. Not a thing in the world wrong with CEPro. This whole scenario is just ridiculous.

Remember back when they said technology was going to make our lives so much easier?!
