In my world it should be very easy to live with one car but sadly it hasn't worked out like that ...Such is life!

Very nice! That's a sleek-looking vehicle. Smile

I just picked up a Chevy Volt a couple of weeks ago. It's so weird to not have to visit a gas station at all.

Wow! That's quite a bit. Mine was a year old and very gently used. Got it for a great price, and the savings in gas alone are about the same as the car payment.

I do like the look of the one you posted a picture of, though. Some day. Smile

I've always been curious. How much has your electric bill gone up since you got that there vehicle?

MAN Phillip...if there was one perk I'd love to get, it's that! That is the exact car I plan to get when I am able. The perfect vehicle. Enjoy!

Jason:

Here where I live the electric rate is $0.08 per kWh for the first 600 kWh, then $0.10 above that. Our last bill cycle shows we used 1100 kWh, which was before we got the car, so any increases will be at the higher ten cents per kWh rate.

The Volt battery holds 16 kWh but only uses 9.6 of it (for longevity), so if I discharged it totally every day and recharged it every night for a month, it would add about $30 to our electric bill.

Of course, that's not how we use it- I rarely drive more than every other day any more (I used to drive 60 miles per day), and since we purchased it have only dropped below 3/4 charge once. So I'd guess my electric bill will go up by $5 to $10 per month. In electric mode I'd say the Volt costs less than one-fourth per mile than using gasoline.

Indeed. Americans are pretty spoiled, even now, with fuel prices.

I remember very clearly when I was a young man of 18, in 1989, buying gas for my '78 Toyota Corona hatchback. It was 73 cents a gallon. I'd usually have enough left after filling up for a couple of the "burgers" they sold at the AM/PM.

Kids these days.... Rolls Eyes

I finished high school during the "gas wars".... In a Buick so thirsty you could watch the needle drop when you punched it. Gas was 29 cents. And we drove all night....

When I first came over, gas in the NY had just broken the psychological $1 a gallon price barrier. It didn't take long for me to realize that however cheap that may have seemed to me, it was a big thing here. Gas prices and car culture are the cornerstones on which the US is built (OK, that's a gross oversimplification, but you know what I mean) and the "open road" is ingrained in the psyche. Modern culture revels in the industry, Bruce Springsteen can sing emotively about a Camero on Route 66... in the UK we get Jasper Carrot singing comically about a Morris Minor on the A1 (or whatever).

The US has encountered major pain in the transition to higher gas prices and the search for alternatives. Europe was half-way there already with high gas taxes and the common usage of cars that get 30 rather than 13 to the gallon. It must be difficult, and I applaud those who embrace it. Just one thing though... will you stop buying the bloody Prius... it's really, really ugly.

Apparently, if you're young enough, you may find ugly Japanese cars attractive. I am not young enough.
