How much will the winner be paid?

The devil, as always, is in the detail.

A quick search revealed that the lucky winner will get $100 for his troubles.

(And other than "a commercial," there's no mention at all of how long the script is.)

And if only "the best one will get payment," then what the hell does "Contract will be awarded to top ten individuals mean?"

BTW, none of this should come as any surprise considering that this lead was posted on ODesk.com.

A recent Craigslist posting:

I need the vocals of a song isolated/extracted and I don’t have the patience to learn about Audacity to do it myself. This is a simple project and should be very easy for someone familiar with this line of work. Anyone interested in this should respond to this ad with a short overview of their experience/skill set. I will be checking my inbox periodically throughout the night and tomorrow, and will reply with the name of the song, and which vocals I need isolated. Compensation for this project will be discussed with those who are interested, but will be determined on the quality of the finished track and how quickly it gets done. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and good luck to all who are interested.

My response:

Interesting that you seem to mysteriously know enough about this to suggest that it is an easy process, but you don’t seem to know the difference between isolation and extraction. I’ll guess you want the lead vocals removed.

Here’s the thing: I have over 30 years in professional audio and have removed my share of vocals from songs. But again you assume things and have decided the fee you would be willing to pay will be based on “the quality of the finished track.”

Here is what you most definitely DO NOT KNOW: The quality of the finished track will depend on a lot more than the skill of the person attempting this. First, hopes of removing vocals from a song are highest ONLY if the recording is a high-quality STEREO recording. Why? Just like you can’t remove the flavor of beef from a steak without creating some side-effect, there are no guarantees of any level of effectiveness. This process only works at all because it will remove ANYTHING that is common to both the left and right channels. So, anything that appears in the ‘center’ (equal left and right) - whether it is vocal, guitar, drums, whatever - will be affected. If there are background vocals that are mixed in stereo and/or there is reverb used, the chances of completely removing them will be seriously decreased, no matter how skilled the person attempting this. And, as I mentioned, a high-quality recording is necessary; if the file you supply has already been compressed, to mp3 for example, that also will reduce the desired outcome.

Finally, the resulting product will no longer be stereo; it will be mono.

If you are looking for someone of experience to provide a quality product, do not insult their intelligence by suggesting you know how simple their job will be. Otherwise, you can do it yourself, Spanky.

And this surprises you? Craigslist is full of idiots who know so much about the value of skilled work that they're not willing to pay for it. Carpet my house for $40. Refinish my hardwoods.... Shouldn't take you more than an afternoon. Looking for someone to stain my deck.... $200 and I won't pay til I'm satisfied. Mow and trim my 1 acre hillside lot for $25. Need someone to shoot my wedding... It'll be great for your portfolio. Needed... Sound recordist for documentary.... Must have your own equipment.... Free lunch and a copy for your reel.

Rule #1: When a job posting (P2P, Craigslist, whatever) includes how quick and/or easy it's going to be, run the other way.

I vote that from now on, all derogatory replies end with the term 'Spanky'. It adds a certain 'Je ne sais qua'. However 'Farkin doody-head' should be used selectively.

My Mic has no noise…but the Cassette recorder that I use has a hiss, does that count? Got the Skype covered, that’s all I use on my notebook after I canceled my cell phone service!

The FedEx service for the cassette will be a little extra!
